Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. once said, "Life's most persistent and
urgent question
is: 'What are you doing for others?'" Each year, Americans across the
country answer
that question by coming together on the King Holiday to serve their
neighbors and
communities. The MLK Day of Service is a part of United We Serve

national call to service initiative.
It calls for Americans from all walks of life to work together to
provide solutions
to our most pressing national problems.

January 17, 2011 will mark the 25th anniversary of the Rev. Dr. Martin
Luther King,
Jr. federal holiday. This milestone is a perfect opportunity for
Americans to honor
Dr. King's legacy through service. The MLK Day of Service empowers
individuals,
strengthens communities, bridges barriers, creates solutions to
social problems,
and moves us closer to Dr. King's vision of a beloved community.

PROFILES IN SERVICE
EVERYDAY YOUNG HEROES

Ivory Price - Detroit, MI

Youth Service America recognizes fifteen year old Ivory Price of
Detroit, Michigan,
as one of our Everyday Young Heroes for her efforts to clean-up Detroit
through
advocacy and long-term service projects.
Ivory Price led a 7 month community clean up and made a comfortable
public space
in a vacant lot to help the Northwest Goldberg neighborhood of Detroit
become the
safe and beautiful place it once was. They also planted an organic
garden that is
providing the neighborhood with fresh produce that is free of charge.
Ivory and
other buildOn members went door-to-door to engage members in the
community, and
held a community meeting which was attended by local officials. Ivory
worked with
team members to design and secure funding for the project, and
researched the community
needs and the history of the area to find a project that was suitable
for the needs
of the community. A total of 200 plus members of the community and
student volunteers
worked together to make this project happen.
As recognition for her urban renewal efforts, Ivory was featured on CNN
as a leader
in the development and restoration of Detroit. Members of the community
are caring
for the organic garden and now have a safe and clean public space to
enjoy due to
the commitment and dedication shown by Ivory.
For her efforts to restore her city and advocate for urban renewal
projects, we
honor Hayley as an Everyday Young Hero.

Research on the Effectiveness of Political Discussion in K-12 Civic
Education

CIRCLE Working Paper #72 addresses whether efforts to systematically
incorporate
media into school curricula increase several elements of civic
engagement, including
students' media use, political knowledge or their sense of being able
to understand
and influence politics (internal political efficacy). In "The
Classroom-Kitchen
Table Connection: The Effects of Political Discussion on Youth
Knowledge and Efficacy,"
authors Vercellotti and Matto find that the combination of reading news
articles
and discussing them at home and school was related to increased
information-seeking
and political knowledge among students who were not in advanced
placement and honors
classes. Moreover, they find that students who were assigned to discuss
articles
at home with parents and who had parents who scored low on measures of
political
knowledge and efficacy, were the most likely to have increased scores
on both dimensions
