I think it is time I step in and introduce myself; although I tend to lurk
more, as I am a Canadian. I grew up with volunteering in my blood so I've
done a fair bit of it. I've done tutoring for blind/vi computer and braille
skills, reception in various places, and currently, work various reception
and other activities with the Canadian Red Cross, which I thoroughly enjoy
... one of the best places I've found to be most accepting and making
accomodations so I can do my job. At first, I almost quit when we were
dealing with accessibility issues with their server through my laptop;
however, that has been all resolved, and things are going quite well,
especially my dog is very well-received there, with his own Red Cross
bandana that was specially made for him.
Over time, I will be doing more volunteer work with the SPCA, to coincide
with my business I am starting in October. I will be running a pet and house
sitting service.
I also sit on a variety of committees, including two subcommittees of the
city council for my city plus Guide Dogs for the Blind.
Despite the amount of volunteer work I've gained, and on my resume, I've had
not had success in locating suitable employment under my experiences and
educational background, after graduating college 2 years ago, so have
decided to go through the self-employment route, so I can continue to do
volunteer work with RC, etc.
I hope this list will expand, and I hope to be able to give ideas,
suggestions/recommendations, etc to the members on the list, for those
starting out the volunteer route. I've been doing volunteer work ever since
being out of high school, so doing it is "old hat" for me.

Subject: [Community-service] new to the list
Hi all,
I'm new to the list. My name is Ashley. I am a young adult who graduated
from Marymount University in May 2009 with a BA in liberal studies.
Currently I am looking for work which is tough for anyone looking for entry
level employment. I want to work in public affairs or public relations for
a nonprofit or work in an outreach capacity. Ideally I'd like my job to
support an organization who helps people.
I love volunteering and believe community service really helps us grow,
network and learn new skills. I helped campus ministry with some outreach
projects when I was a student. Currently I don't do any volunteer work but
I hope that changes if the organizations I called respond to me.
I joined to find out what other blind people are doing for community service
and how you do your work.
Take care.
Ashley
