You got that right! Perhaps a musical device or something that any person can use would be a good prize.

Food donation events are always needed no matter where you are across this nation. Even our own peers are impacted by the reality of sometimes not having enough food on the table for their family. You could request that for every non-perishable food item you bring and donate up to 5 items, you receive a ticket that goes into a drawing for a prize TBD. We do this with an organization I belong to here, and actually give a firearm away. This all takes place in the matter of 4 hours, and this past year we raised 1750 pounds of food and over $300 in cash. We also were able to purchase food and sell 5 cans of food for $5 for those who forgot as the items were purchased at Sam’s Club, so we got the biggest bang for our buck. We also had the local food bank at our event to help out as they took the food at the end of the day, gave us great credit, and in the end, everyone was a winner.

Hi Brooke and all,

I’m a member of the Community Service Group leadership team. Let me see if I can help clarify a couple things.

I think the post Denyece is referring to is the one I wrote before Christmas asking for alumni of AmeriCorps who would be interested in speaking at our community service seminar at the 2014 national convention. We still welcome potential speakers if any more AmeriCorps alums see this and are interested.

The post Darian sent out yesterday is separate and is asking for general ideas for events or activities that people would like to see the Community Service Group do during national convention. A couple people have already posted good ideas; I’m excited to see what else you all can come up with!

The Community Service Group, and by extention this list, is for anyone who is interested in community service, whether they regularly participate in service or are a little hesitant about participating because maybe they don’t know how or where to get started. You don’t have to be a current member or an alum of AmeriCorps to be a part of the group. AmeriCorps is just one way that people can serve. Members of the Community Service Group participate in all kinds of service activities, and this list is a place where people can share those experiences, share community service-related resources, ask questions about how and where to serve, and discuss community service in general and where they would like to see the Community Service Group go in the future.

So Brooke, if you have an interest in community service, then this list is absolutely pertinent to you, and I would like to welcome you and anyone else who has recently joined. We’re glad to have you!

I hope this helps clarify things.

Chris

Hi Peace...I played 'Peace i ask of thee, O river, somewhere in church service prelude today!

I remember Americorps in the initial conversation now, thanks for reminding me. Well, the only connection I have with Americorp is--in researching their sites for info on funding, I came across info that taught me about the 'MOU' and DBS and VR. It was timely info for me too.

So, I guess i will need to unsubscribe from this group/list as it is not pertinent to me? Not sure about that either.

Thanks again, Peaceful...

bre

ps..brooke has an e on the end of it. I get that lopsided feeling when it's left off! lolz

Hello again,

Thanks for the question, b-low! (blow the clarinet!)

I read on this list other day a list of community services, one was Habitat for Humanity. I thought, gee, maybe i signed on too early...I cannot picture myself working with Habitat for Humanity and so forth.

Yes, please clarify. Well, duh, he said--we need to brainstorm. Ah, I'm getting it! lolz

Here in my town we have 'The Braille Club of the Palm Beaches', inc. 1935. It is s social club only for blind and visually impaired persons. it is a small group of about 30, on average, and is a very active club. I am wondering, still brainstorming here, how this group could help the Braille Club benefit its community--the entire community--on a greater scale.

Is this close to what you are meaning/looking for?

I'll keep thinking! I'm good it thinking! How about y'all?

Hi Darian,

Could you clarify or narrow down exactly what you mean by "do as the
community service group?" Are you looking for specific suggestions
related to the projects we have going, social get-together options,
etc?

Thanks,
