This is really great dialogue, all I have experience is Cleveland
Sight Center but I want to believe that those who provide
rehabilitation training do their best at all training centers. When I
lost my vision I was 24 years old and, with 2 young children. I lived
in Cleveland my entire life and never heard of the sight center, my
doctors made the referral for me. When I began my training is when I
was introduced to the nfb, no one mentioned it's training centers.
This was in the early 80's and it was not feasible for me to travel to
a nfb center, even if I knew about them.
csc instructors pushed me to learn basic braille skills for my
personal use. Braille is very difficult for me, my brain just does not
want to accept it. During that time the training was intense. In
recent years, because of budget cuts and changes with how to bill
services the training is done in a more creative way. Using other
community partners for some services.
People that I know that have attended state schools for the blind and
nfb centers are very well trained and independent. I think some of
this is basic personality differences. Just as some sighted students
excel and have difficulties in some subjects it is the same with us.
