[Community-service] Community-service Digest, Vol 48, Issue 43

Hello, everyone!

My name is Darlene Laibl-Crowe and I am a member of the State Wide Chapter
in Florida. I like the idea of CPR classes and putting together kits.
That will be great way of emergency preparation.

However, I would like to add more to this. Maybe we can include the
information that each community has an Emergency Management or Emergency
Alert Center. They have a program in which those who need medical
assistance can contact them to give what they need so the person can know
where he or she can go. Also, by noting to them that we are 'blind', they
can be aware of how to better provide emergency assistance for this group.

Each county is required to do a drill to be prepared in case of an
emergency, a disaster and it would be wonderful if the disabled group
participated in these events.

I am Blind and Hard of Hearing...I went to Helen Keller National Center in
NY for eight months in 2011 to train for my specific needs. They included a
class on Emergency Preparedness. They educated us on how we should always
keep an emergency bag waiting at the exit of our homes incase of a fire.
This bag holds many things that we need...for example a plastic bag that
contains copies of important papers.

This is a form Self-education, Self-Advocacy is important and everyone (not
just the blind) need to know what they need, the resources that can be
obtained and this will help them to overcome their limitations...empower
them.

Thanks for all you are doing!
(smile)
Darlene

Michele,
excellent idea. Sometime, I'll write a good clear letter to red cross. I do
like the idea of working with APH or maybe NBP to get their items in
braille.
Yes, cost is a common excuse; heard that one a lot. Red cross needs to hear
this idea. I'll bring it to their attention, unless someone in this interest

group gets to it before me.

Ashley

seminar at national convention

I wonder if the Red Cross and other nonprofits could work with the American
printing House for the blind to get their materials into alternative
formats. And maybe they could split the cost. I don't know enough about the
APH to know if this is the kind of thing they do, but I do know cost is
always given as an excuse not to produce Printed materials in formats
accessible to the blind.

Hi everyone.
First, your messages are coming through perfectly Michelle.
Second, good idea Cheryl, good idea.
Actually considered the idea and ran it by some folks at national who
thought it might be best if it were integrated into meet the blind month.
I think that such a good idea could be modified in this manner: coordinate a
service project on a day of service (E. G. Martin Luther King day of service
or 9/11 day of service.)
We could also do something in April. I believe that this is far enough away
from meet the blind month but close enough to national convention where we
can get people excited for all three things.
National global youth service Day is in the month of April. This is
wonderful for our student divisions if we were to get by in from them.
All of this said, such a coordinated effort would need someone or some
people who will be willing to take responsibility for it. At the moment, I
can't. and I typically look to someone or some people who feel strongly
enough about it to see if they might want to do something about it. My gut
feeling tells me that we are probably a couple of years away from
coordinating such an effort. I look forward to being proven wrong.

Michelle Mitchell brought up a really good idea regarding alternative
materials for service The next question is, how do we make something like
this happen? It isn't too far-fetched that this group might take on such a
project. The idea is conceived, so that is a start.
Again, people? We need people (don't we always?). Maybe a group of people
might form and we might try to work collaboratively with the Jernigan
Institute.
Such a collaboration would be very beneficial for all involved.
Thoughts? Volunteers? :-)

This electronic message has been brought to you by my mobile device.

Hi Darrien and all,

I don't usually post to this list as I'm super busy with school, but
I've been following the threads and all the ideas are fantastic. I
just want to throw something out there. Maybe a concerted day of
service for the whole NFB might be a large endeavor to plan, but why
not create resources for affiliates and local chapters to use to get
involved in the community? I go to a Jesuit university and service
learning is a huge deal here so service is like a second language to
me and I always want more people to get involved in community service.
However, it's sometimes difficult to know where to start. If we could
create a guide of some sort that we could distribute to affiliate
chapters and encourage them to do a service project once a month, once
every six months, or whatever, then I think a lot of people would get
on board with the idea. Also, I think the biggest force of volunteers
out there right now are students, so we might try to target student
divisions and get them to volunteer together or even individually,
like tutoring a younger student in need, etc. Just some thoughts.

That?s a great idea.
in the past people have come to us looking for ideas.
As we?ve not had the people power to move towards coordinated service
efforts and could only offer personal experiences, we didn?t have too much
to offer.
I think that once agencies become more familiar with us, and we develop a
wealth of knowledge, we might move towards a guide; one that is consistent
with the focused goals of the group.
We can easily share basic guides on how to put together a service
project? those are already in existence), but how to disclose that your
group is blind, or how to figure out when a group is turning you away due
to your blindness, or how to work as a team with the various degrees of
vision on that team, making sure all have true roles and responsibilities
(making sure that vision means more or less work).. things like that? we
have to get footing there.
Once the agencies start to recognize the the federation and the group, we
can start to identify options for chapters and affiliates.
maybe we can start to develop this type of guide after National convention
concert with the efforts of Michelle Mitchell?s resource and research
committee?

Hello All,
Lovin' it! I'm thinking maybe we could incorporate most of these thoughts.
Create the resource list for affiliates asking them to do a project at
certain intervals for 1 year

Prepare to use one of the days Darian mentioned for the next year for
national nfb participation

It will take a committed person to pull this together. We can start
the resource list on this list, send what we are involved in, brief
description, with contact information.

Using students is great, this can breathe new life to the organization!
