The purpose of the community service discussion list is to promote jointly the positive philosophy of the National Federation of the Blind and the positive effects that community service and service learning have on self and country from the blind person's perspective. This list will also promote and encourage involvement in community service and service learning in order to demonstrate actively the philosophy of the National Federation of the Blind at the local, state, and national levels of the organization.

Discussion topics can include how to find a service opportunity, personal experiences with service projects, alternative techniques for effectively performing tasks on the project site, and strategies for appropriately educating supervisors, volunteers, and other members of the volunteer community about the abilities of the blind in the service setting. Postings of service opportunities from organizations (e.g., AmeriCorps, Peace Corps, Habitat for Humanity, and the United Way) and other opportunities that would be beneficial to individuals looking to get involved in community service are welcome. Accounts of service projects taken on by chapters, divisions, and affiliates are also welcome as they function as positive examples of the National Federation of the Blind in the community service arena. Announcements concerning the activities of the National Federation of the Blind Community Service Division, including communications from the board of directors, committee meetings, and topical conference calls, will be disseminated through this list as well.

In addition to this listserv, interested individuals may connect with the division via Twitter by following @NFBCSDivision, Facebook by searching for “National Federation of the Blind Community Service Division,” and our blog by visiting nfbcommunityservice.wordpress.com.

The National Federation of the Blind knows that blindness is not the
characteristic that defines you or your future. Every day we raise the
expectations of blind people, because low expectations create obstacles
between blind people and our dreams. You can have the life you want;
blindness is not what holds you back.

 “”...The challenges we face will not be solved with one meeting in one night. Change will not come if we wait for some other person or some other time.

We are the ones we've been waiting for. We are the change that we seek...” -Barack Obama
 Your unwanted vehicle can be just what the blind need to make possibilities reality.
