[Community-service] Community-service Digest, Vol 62, Issue 4

Why not reopen it is a great question. I had a fight with my previous DVR counselor and close my case. That was last April and now that I'm wanting to go to blind Inc. in Minnesota I just re-opened my case and it didn't take that long. I reapplied in February and am meeting with my new counselor this Thursday. I don't know which state you are in nor do I know the rules for how to reopen your case, but in Wisconsin you can self refer to vocational rehab services. This is what I did and as I stated did not take long to reinitiate my case. All I did was call the office and my community, tell them I wanted to reopen my case and then they sent me the proper forms to fill out. I just got them filled out, dropped them back at the office, and things moved quickly from there. Just because I got my case reopened quickly does not ensure me anything else of course, but I am very excited and feel I might have a good chance with this new person. That doesn't mean I won't have a lot of work to do to convince her or the supervisors above her this is a great idea and will save the money in the long run but at least I have a positive attitude rather than an adversarial one. I know the previous counselor would not support my endeavor to take training outside the state.

Be brave, take a deep breath, and reopen your case if this is really important to you. You're not alone in this battle and this is not the only one you will have in your life. Remember the old adage: what doesn't kill us makes us stronger. The more you could advocate for yourself now the easier everything else in life will be. Best of luck to you.
