Never worked on a campaign, but I have signed papers to get some people elected. I still talk to them and I know my state representatives by face and name. They know me also. One is a Facebook friend!

> M, One of the most exciting experiences of my life was volunteering for the Obama campaign. I felt very special to be chosen as faith community volunteer coordinator for East Cleveland. There were 2 other blind people that I knew volunteering in another suburb. Well, little did I know, no one else volunteered for that job, lol! Nearing the end of the campaign, others stepped up and it was fun.
> I worked with some of the most awesome, dedicated, and energetic young people. They came from all over the country and the world. The way things were set up at that time, did not allow me to participate in phone banking. I had no computer skills and no cell phone. So, the neighborhood coordinator, Jessica Bird, and I winged it. Nothing was in braille, not that I could read it, lol! Everything was accessible on the computer. We visited places of worship all over the city, attended rally's, planned neighborhood conversations and cozy home talks for special supporters. Knocked on doors registering voters, meeting old friends and making new ones. Arranged housing for tired travelers, cooked food and asked everyone I knew to cook meals, and speaking engagements. Traveled from Cleveland to Columbus, Ohio several times for trainings. Attended events, Bill Clinton and Cornell West, were the most exciting. However each time Obama came into Cleveland I declined to attend. These visits were always televised and I wanted to have the best seat, at home, so I could listen carefully. I have knocked around the idea of writing of the experience, there's nothing like it! Everyone should try it at least once.
> As a result of my volunteering, I was asked to volunteer on other campaigns and learned how to use the computer after learning how to type and finally I am in braille classes. Extending ourselves into unfamiliar territory can really open many possibilities! Blessings, C

I forgot to say that transportation was provided for me, no need for paratransit, smiles, they would not have been able to keep up. Make your energy level is up. I'm not sure if I would do it again, because nothing can top that first time in 2008. However, since it is volunteer work, you can set your own pace early in the campaign, establish how you best fit into the big picture and just do it! C

> A few weeks ago, I was at my regular community service project. A monthly food distribution and Senator Sherrod Brown and his wife were there for about an half hour. He was very cordial, as usual and his wife is very kind and friendly. However, I administrate this program and was extremely busy, others were trying to engage him and if he did not observe that I am blind no one probably mentioned it. They would not mention that I am a member of nfb either. When I am there I do not use my cane and most folks are used to me, no novelty.
> As a matter of fact, I never thought about speaking to him about nfb, lots of activity during the food distribution. The new ceo of the greater Cleveland Food Bank was there with her admin assistant, they arrived early and I had lots of time to talk to them, again, nfb did not enter the conversation.
> I believe that we must remain visible in our communities at every level. Work diligently and sincerely while volunteering. When it is time to meet with legislators, maybe we could invite them to us a little more often so that the nfb name/ brand is firmly placed into their minds. This is quite a quandary. Perhaps, we should ask ourselves what we wish to achieve when volunteering, Cheryl
