> “I like nonsense; it wakes up the brain cells.” Dr. Seuss. Greetings Fellow Federationists! My name is Tekesha Saffold from the sunshine state of Florida and I would like to share my community service excitement. On Friday, September 28th, I had the pleasure of demonstrating a show and tell to two second grade classes about the brain and how it relates to the senses. In my demonstration, I explained to the students that I was blind, but I am able to use my other senses to live without sight. I described how I am able to read by listening to a book with my ears and how I am able to read braille with feeling the bump dots with my fingers. I provided a little background information on Louis Braille and how cool of a guy he was. I provided the children with braille alphabet cards, which we read the alphabet card out loud. I also asked the kids to close their eyes to demonstrate audio description by using our imagination. Also, I demonstrated how I am able to use my phone by using voiceover and they were so fascinated. Furthermore, I introduced the kids to my white cane, which the name of my cane is candy cane. The kids really enjoyed the opportunity of learning about the brain and how it relates to vision and other senses. I plan to return with cupcakes in November for the school’s community event because the kids asked if I would return and I was delighted to provide fun educational information. "To the world you may be one person; but to one person you may be the world."-Dr. Seuss.
