[Community-service] Desk/computer work

Anna,

I ran into the same challenge as a volunteer needing a computer.
Right, most places will not have the software.

This is my solution. Either download the free jaws demo on their pc or bring
your own copy of jaws.
Remember, you can install jaws on 3 computers. I do not think freedom
scientific uses CDS anymore to install software. I used the cd in my case.
IT installed it since they have administrative rights.
You could have them download jaws from the internet.
This may not work though if you have a home license of jaws as opposed to
the professional version.

I was able to install jaws at my unpaid internship at National Crime
Prevention Council. I also did this for my volunteer position as an
information and referral specialist. Most nonprofits I tried to work for
were receptive to installing software.
However, I was not able to work there because of the nature of tasks. Visual
tasks such as data entry, filing, and seeing that people signed in were
some tasks that desk volunteer staff needed to perform and I could not do
that.
That said, every nonprofit requires different things and I think trying to
work at a desk job will be great experience for you and your resume.
Its great practice for a real job.
So, it may work out.

If you cannot install jaws there, I suggest using NVDA or they may allow you
to bring your own laptop.
If you plan to work there a long time, I would hope they would purchase jaws
as an accomodation.

I hope it works out!

Ashley

Subject: [Community-service] Desk/computer work

Hey everyone,
Just looking for some suggestions.
There’s a front desk shift (volunteer) three hours per week at a yoga studio
that I’d really like to do. I don’t know yet exactly what all would be
involved, but I’m wondering since it’s just volunteer, they probably don’t
have JAWS or something like that on computer or would want to get it. I have
it on my laptop but want me to use their computer and systems.
Just wondering how that all might work or be possible?
I’d like to be ready to discuss possibilities when I express my interest.

Thanks much,
Anna
