"We must be careful with our words – we’re like superheroes and words are
like our super powers. Super powers should always be used to help others."

Thank you Miranda for using your superpowers to help others fight another
day. To serve as a crisis volunteer takes a whole lot of courage and
patience. We appreciate all your selfless acts which are driven from within
to live to serve.

Miranada's reflection

I volunteer with Crisis Text Line for a minimum of 4 hours per week and
have done so since March 2020. Common topics of conversation include
relationships, stress and anxiety, and isolation and loneliness. Feedback
from texters and supervisors has been positive, and I am increasing my
skills through each interaction. I set personal goals as I move forward in
my experience, and the skills I have gained benefit me personally and
professionally.

Service to Armed Forces Virtual Casework with the American Red Cross

March 2020 – Present

Training and Support Reflection

As a Service to Armed Forces virtual caseworker, I received 10 hours of
training. While much of my training was self-paced, I did engage in 3 hours
of supervisor-led training with the database platform and mock client
conversations. My experience with the training platform as someone who is
visually impaired and uses assistive technology was pretty positive. In the
areas where the technology did not cooperate, I utilized Aira at a free
Aira free access location to complete those inaccessible portions of
training. My supervisor provided me with the necessary materials to perform
my work, and she is always available to answer any questions or concerns
and work with me through more complex cases. There are always opportunities
to grow within the organization, whether through the Service to Armed
Forces division or through engaging with other volunteer opportunities.
With the Covid-19 pandemic, the Department of Defense has restricted
requests for the military community to be granted leave requests. We have
also received further training and guidance on this and other relevant
matters in a timely and accessible manner.
