We are wrapping up National Novel Writing month!

And we want to acknowledge one last dedicated volunteer that enjoys the art
of writing!

Here’s the final piece written by

A GOLDEN SERVANT

It's funny to hear people talk about the good old days.

Because it's not a song I'd think I'll ever sing.

I often wondered where Mama would go, nights and days,

Did she forget about having us three youngins at home?

I didn't spend much time playing games or making new friends,

I had to go on the hunt for our next meal, clean diapers, and things.

Can't tell ya how many years I played the Mom, Dad, and the big brother,

But I sure won't ever forget the Angel I met on that hot foggy day.

She didn't have wings and wasn't much to look at,

But man did she ever have a heart of the purest of golds.

I'd go to the market and steal one egg from three different cartons,

Then I'd put them in my pants pocket and run back home.

One Monday morning, the Angel caught me stealing the second egg,

And I didn't know what to do, so I took off running and hid at home.

Mama hadn't been home in a few days, but I knew she'd hear what I'd done,

And I'd be whipped from here to next Sunday.

Night went and morning came, and I had thanked God no one came knocking.

I'd figured I'd lay low for the day,

Just in case someone would come and make me pay.

When I stepped out to get the mail that morning,

There were five large paper bags filled with goodies,

And a note that read,

"I remember what it was like to be hungry and I don't want you to know that
feeling.

As long as you live here, I'll bring you and your family five bags of
groceries, Love Angel Shae."

Like I said, it's funny to hear people talk about the good old days,

Because I think there's only one song I'll ever sing,

Thanking God for the Angel that caught me stealing my second egg,

On that long ago hot foggy day!
