[Community-Service] working at a food pantry or clothing closet

Hi all,

I've been legally blind all my life but still feel I'm adapting to the
world made for people who see completely fine. I mentioned last email a bit
about that. While growing up, I was glad to have teachers of the visually
impaired who expected a lot and taught me alternative techniques for my
academic studies. I learned large print and writing. But after that, when
they knew my eyes fatigued a lot, I was taught braille reading and writing.
I also used talking products like talking calculators and timers.

I was taught to use a cane some as well and assistive technology.

Anyways, I'm trying to see how I might contribute to some projects given the
labels are in small print.

A few volunteer projects I'm considering at local nonprofits are working at
a food pantry or clothing closet. Some nonprofits have both.

Has anyone done this? Based on the small description, it says volunteers

Organize and stock shelves as well as greet recipients shopping for
necessities.

To sort the food and stock it in an organized way, I obviously need to
identify the items. At home I can use some tactile marking or braille labels
for labeling but this will not have any tactile labels.

I'm thinking I'd either read the label or work with a partner who can read
the items and I can then put it in the appropriate place.

I also know many food items can be identified by touch and plan to use that
sense as well for when I can.

Some nonprofits also need someone for outreach and writing content for
social media in addition to the food pantry which I could do since I can
write well using my pc running Jaws.

Any ideas? What do you think

Thanks,

Ashley

PS: Serena, that is great news you are able to work part time at the library
for the blind. I plan to pursue part time work in the near future as well
and it might be with a literacy organization or tutoring kids since I like
to read. I'm a bookworm.
