State University in Jacksonville, Alabama is finding innovative ways to use the CNCS Volunteer Generation Fund grant it received earlier this year from <a href="http://links.govdelivery.com:80/track?type=click&enid=ZWFzPTEmbWFpbGluZ2lkPTIwMTMwODEzLjIxOTY5MjYxJm1lc3NhZ2VpZD1NREItUFJELUJVTC0yMDEzMDgxMy4yMTk2OTI2MSZkYXRhYmFzZWlkPTEwMDEmc2VyaWFsPTE3NzI4Mjc3JmVtYWlsaWQ9ZHM5NDEyNEBhb2wuY29tJnVzZXJpZD1kczk0MTI0QGFvbC5jb20mZmw9JmV4dHJhPU11bHRpdmFyaWF0ZUlkPSYmJg==&&&101&&&http://www.servealabama.gov/" style="color: #076BAA;">Serve Alabama</a>. Many projects and events are underway to
increase disaster volunteerism at the campus and in the community, but one in
particular shows high promise for success. The program coordinator for the
project, Sherry Kitchens, attended the orientation “browse sessions” for the
incoming freshman class. Nearly 100 freshmen signed up to attend an
organizational meeting to be held after the Fall Semester begins. At this meeting the students will be given
further information about disaster volunteerism and will have the chance to
meet community agencies and organizations and learn about disaster volunteer
opportunities. Just imagine… if these
students affiliate with a disaster agency and volunteer for the four years they
attend JSU they will be able to take the knowledge and skills they learn

T</span><span>here were over 40 requests for
assistance. </span><span>A total of 35 volunteers came to assist. A total

is working in partnership with FEMA, the State of Alaska Department of Homeland
Security and Emergency Management, and the Alaska State Service
Commission, Serve Alaska, to assist communities affected by ice jam flooding of
the Yukon River (May 17 – June 11). The event was federally declared on June 25
and supports the recovery of multiple Alaskan bush communities; Galena is the
largest of the villages and one of the most affected communities.<span></span></span></span></li><li style="color: #000000; font-size: 12px; margin-bottom: 0px; text-align: left; font-family: verdana,geneva;"><span>To
date a total of </span><b>48</b><span> AmeriCorps members and program staff have responded.
Programs involved are: Washington Conservation Corps, Iowa Dept. of Natural
Resources (deployed by the Iowa Commission on Volunteer Service) and
the Conservation Corps Minnesota Iowa. The current force of AmeriCorps on
the ground is </span><b>35</b><span>. On August 14, </span><b>8</b><span> members from the Hoopa TCCC
AmeriCorps program will join the response to relieve the Iowa Dept of Natural
Resources.</span></li><li style="color: #000000; font-size: 12px; margin-bottom: 0px; text-align: left; font-family: verdana,geneva;"><span>Other
villages: In coordination with FEMA, the State, and disaster response non
profit and faith based groups, small strike teams will travel to the smaller,
more remote villages to muck/gut homes and perform home repair. The
first group will travel to Alakanuk next week. </span></li><li style="color: #000000; font-size: 12px; margin-bottom: 0px; text-align: left; font-family: verdana,geneva;"><span>Other
Tasks: Teams will be supporting the donations and warehouse management system
based out of Fairbanks in coordination with the State, Adventist Community
