introduce myself. My name is Bernadette Jackel and I have a soon-to-be 20
year old son with CVI. Although he is not blind, he functions at the
definition of blindness especially in new environments and learning new
skills. He currently attends <st1:place w:st="on"><st1:PlaceName w:st="on">Perkins</st1:PlaceName>
<st1:PlaceType w:st="on">School</st1:PlaceType></st1:place> for the Blind
where he has been since 8th grade due to our district not understanding his
visual impairment. He will graduate from Perkins in June, 2012. We
are in the process of transitioning him into adulthood, not too dissimilar to
what we are going to be doing for our daughter who graduated this past
Monday from <st1:place w:st="on"><st1:PlaceName w:st="on">Boston</st1:PlaceName>
<st1:PlaceType w:st="on">College</st1:PlaceType></st1:place>. That being
said, there are things we need to do for our son that we will not have to do
for our daughter. He is capable of living independently with some
support, can hold a job, although unlikely it would be a job that will fully
support him, and have a life that is his own. We are I would

I know what you mean about the public transportation in the <st1:City
w:st="on"><st1:place w:st="on">Boston</st1:place></st1:City> area. I
spent 2 summers during high school at the <st1:PlaceName w:st="on">Carroll</st1:PlaceName>
<st1:PlaceType w:st="on">Center</st1:PlaceType> for the Blind in <st1:place
w:st="on"><st1:City w:st="on">Newton</st1:City>, <st1:State w:st="on">MA</st1:State></st1:place>,
and I came to really love public transportation. I grew up in a little
town of 6,000 people in northeastern <st1:State w:st="on"><st1:place w:st="on">Connecticut</st1:place></st1:State>,
and I had barely ever experienced public transportation until that time.
It was so liberating. We do have towns in <st1:State w:st="on">Connecticut</st1:State>
with public transportation, but <st1:City w:st="on"><st1:place w:st="on">Bristol</st1:place></st1:City>
might not be one of them. What <st1:City w:st="on"><st1:place w:st="on">Bristol</st1:place></st1:City>
does have, though, are some great public high schools and ESPN. I
encourage you to come to our state convention in November so that we can all
get to know you.<br>

Hello to everyone out there in NFB cyber space. My name is Michael<br>
McDermott, I am kind of a newby to <st1:State w:st="on"><st1:place w:st="on">Ct.</st1:place></st1:State>
since I moved here 2.5 years<br>
ago with my wife from <st1:City w:st="on"><st1:place w:st="on">Boston</st1:place></st1:City>.
I am not new to the Federation though<br>
as I have been blind since age 8 and I am 39 years old and I have been<br>
apart of NFB for most of that time, so glad the national organization<br>
exist and so glad to be able to attend my local chapter. It is nice<br>
to know that there are others of us out there who had to confront<br>
similar issues and overcome them. Through this organization and<br>
through the new mailing list perhaps we can build on all of our<br>
strengths and experiences to help each other. As I said before I am a<br>
transport from <st1:City w:st="on"><st1:place w:st="on">Boston</st1:place></st1:City>,
consequently I have had culture shock and still<br>
am having it periodically with my transition to CT. Perhaps my fellow<br>
brothers and sisters can help me with that. Getting back to why I<br>
moved here, it's because I don't have any living family or relatives<br>
in <st1:place w:st="on"><st1:City w:st="on">Cambridge</st1:City> <st1:State
w:st="on">MA</st1:State></st1:place>. where I grew up, also I married my wife
in <st1:City w:st="on"><st1:place w:st="on">Bristol</st1:place></st1:City> 10<br>
years ago on May 26, so I wanted to move her back to her home town so<br>
as to be closer to my new family. I think I underestimated the<br>
difficulties living in subberbia has for a blind person though as well<br>
as the various transportation issues. Hope to meet most of you folks<br>
and I am sure I will adjust after all you folks did! Please excuse any<br>
negative vibes about CT., it has some positive elements and I do like<br>
living in Suberbia as aposed to the big city, but am just having some<br>
issues regarding the loss of independence and the difficulty of the<br>
terrain.<br>
