The concern about the statement, "maintains safety
of blind individuals is not a reflection on the safety of staff members who are
blind. After all, these individuals have received training in the area of
safe, indipendent travel whether walking with a white cane,or a guide
dog. The Special Assistant often provides information to the staff member
about the physical environment when working with a client at there home.
For instance, a porch may have an unstable railing or the steps may be in
disrepair to the point of disintegrating if weight is placed upon them.
The staff member might find themselves in an
environment with unsafe wiring or clutter which has resulted from hoarding
behavior. The home may be filthy due to improper care of children and
animals. The list is endless. Nevertheless, the blind staff
person determines whether to continue the appointment in the
environment or recommend working in another facility. I hope this explains some
of the situations which can arise.
