Still, this isn’t really the business of the NFB. Do we seek to get all blind persons of “third world” countries citizenship in the U.S. just because they are or will become blind? That just isn’t practical. Perhaps we should take interest if someone wants a visa in order to obtain or learn about the NFB’s training and advocacy methods. But the video and messages I’ve gotten regarding the child and family suggest this goes beyond simple citizenship and membership in the Parents of Blind Children division of the NFB. The message we’ve presented to the media and to the senator suggests we want the child to get surgery to save or restore vision. The video portrays
blindness as tragic, and this is rather disturbing, not to mention antithetical to what we want for the blind. Of course, we might not be able to get the family visas without such a media message, but that’s a good reason not to engage in the citizenship business. The family is perfectly welcome to participate in the NFB Parents of Blind Children without citizenship or residency in the U.S. Now please don’t get me wrong, as Justin, I, and a few others have stated many times, there is nothing necessarily wrong with helping someone pursue surgery, or humanitarian visas. I am sure we can engage in such business without making it the business of the NFB. The NFB in no way dictates the activities we engage in passionately on a daily basis. Folks here are welcome to gather together for whatever cause or activity pleases. It could be religious or what have you; but it need not be the business of the NFB.</span></div><div
