<p style="margin: 0;"><a href="#" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" style="font-weight: bold; color: #0078c1; text-decoration: underline; font-style: normal;">One of my favorite movies is \u201cGhost\u201d and my favorite scene from the movie is the pottery scene with Patrick Swayze and Demi Moore. The mood, the visuals, and of course the music, \u201cUnchained Melody\u201d sung by the Righteous Brothers the only audio makes the scene, one of the most romantic movie scenes ever! What has that got to do with Blind History? Read on. </a></p>
<p style="margin: 0;"><span style="font-weight: bold;"> </span></p>
<p style="margin: 0;"><span style="font-weight: bold;"> "Unchained Melody" was first recorded by Al Hibbler in 1955. The song, written by Alex North for the film "Unchained" and the lyrics added by Hy Zaret. Al Hibbler's version made the top 10 Billboard Chart that year. (Al Hibbler\u2019s music can be found today on Amazon and YouTube.)</span></p>
<p style="margin: 0;"><span style="font-weight: bold;"> </span></p>
<p style="margin: 0;"><span style="font-weight: bold;">A Pioneering Music Career</span></p>
<p style="margin: 0;"><span style="font-weight: bold;"> </span></p>
<p style="margin: 0;"><span style="font-weight: bold;">Albert \u201cAl\u201d Hibbler (1915\u20132001) was born in Mississippi, the grandson of slaves. He and a younger brother Hubert were born blind. As children of sharecroppers, Al and Hubert picked cotton along with the rest of the family at a young age. After the family moved to Arkansas, the blind brothers were sent to the Arkansas School for the Colored Blind when Al was about 14 years old. He and his brother still lived in Little Rock at the school in 1936 even though their family had long moved back to Mississippi. </span></p>
<p style="margin: 0;"><span style="font-weight: bold;"> </span></p>
<p style="margin: 0;"><span style="font-weight: bold;">The school for the Colored Blind, located at W 11</span><sup style="font-weight: bold;">th</sup><span style="font-weight: bold;"> and Battery St, stressed music. Al sang in the choir. The school was in the \u201cBlissville,\u201d the thriving Black community of Little Rock. Many Black owned barber shops, restaurants, pharmacies, and clubs lined W 9</span><sup style="font-weight: bold;">th</sup><span style="font-weight: bold;"> Street. Black operated fraternities developed and supported the community including providing insurance and funerals.</span></p>
<p style="margin: 0;"><span style="font-weight: bold;"> </span></p>
<p style="margin: 0;"><span style="font-weight: bold;">Al never graduated from the school for the blind. A promoter discovered Al singing in the small clubs around the school and got him several auditions with band leaders coming into Little Rock. Al took voice classes at the New England Conservatory of Music in 1935-1936 for two terms with the financial help from a local businessman. </span></p>
<p style="margin: 0;"><span style="font-weight: bold;"> </span></p>
<p style="margin: 0;"><span style="font-weight: bold;">In 1936-1938, he became the first Black person to have a radio program of his own. He whistled and sang \u201cStar Dust\u201d at 7:45 p.m. daily on KGHI in Little Rock. </span></p>
<p style="margin: 0;"><span style="font-weight: bold;"> </span></p>
<p style="margin: 0;"><span style="font-weight: bold;">At the Dreamland Ballroom in the Taborian Hall on 9</span><sup style="font-weight: bold;">th</sup><span style="font-weight: bold;"> Street Al sang with the many bands that came from the East Coast like Fats Waller and Fletcher Henderson. The Dreamland Ballroom was the premier night spot for the Black community. About 1935, he first sang with the Duke Ellington Band. Ellington told Al, \u201cIf you ever make it to New York, come see me.\u201d</span></p>
<p style="margin: 0;"><span style="font-weight: bold;"> </span></p>
<p style="margin: 0;"><span style="font-weight: bold;">Al met Dub Jenkins & His Playmates of Memphis, Tennessee, when they played a tour date in Little Rock. Al left Little Rock with them in 1938 and stayed with them for a year and a half. While in Memphis, he won a talent contest. Al spent two years (1940-1942) with Boots and His Buddies out of San Antonio, Texas. </span></p>
<p style="margin: 0;"><span style="font-weight: bold;"> </span></p>
<p style="margin: 0;"><span style="font-weight: bold;">In December of 1941, he auditioned for Jay McShann, also Black, and his orchestra in Kansas City and almost lost the job because of his blindness. Saxophonist Charlie Parker said that if McShann did not hire Al, he would quit. McShann said, \u201cOk, I\u2019ll hire him, but you\u2019ll have to look after him.\u201d Al had street smarts but did not use a cane and did not have the best travel skills for a blind man. Al recorded his first record with McShann, \u201cGet Me on Yor Mind\u201d on the Decca label.</span></p>
<p style="margin: 0;"><span style="font-weight: bold;"> </span></p>
<p style="margin: 0;"><span style="font-weight: bold;">Al found his way to New York City, performing as a solo artist at the Savoy and the Apollo Club. One night Al went to the Hurricane Club to hear Duke Ellington. He asked the band leader if he remembered him. Duke said yes and hired him for the next eight and a half years. </span></p>
<p style="margin: 0;"><span style="font-weight: bold;"> </span></p>
<p style="margin: 0;"><span style="font-weight: bold;">Many did not realize the singer in the band was blind. Al listened to Duke\u2019s voice before coming on stage and aimed for the voice and the mic. Al stood beside Duke when performing. Duke sometimes gave him quiet verbal cues. When it was time to go off stage, someone talked from the wings and Al left, guided by the sounds. When on the streets, they walked side by side. Duke nudged Al\u2019s shoulder if he wanted Al to turn or avoid something.</span></p>
<p style="margin: 0;"><span style="font-weight: bold;"> </span></p>
<p style="margin: 0;"><span style="font-weight: bold;">Racial animus followed him, even though he was a headliner. During an appearance by the Ellington orchestra at the San Francisco Opera House, Al stepped out the stage door to grab a breath of fresh air while the band was playing onstage. Moments later, band members rushed outside after hearing Al scream to find that someone had crept up on the singer and ground out a lit cigarette on his face before running off.</span></p>
<p style="margin: 0;"><span style="font-weight: bold;"> </span></p>
<p style="margin: 0;"><span style="font-weight: bold;">Al made more than 82 records with the Ellington band. He also recorded with other artists and performed with other bands when not performing with Duke. In 1947, he was presented with the E</span><span style="font-weight: bold; font-style: italic;">squire New Star Award for Male Jazz Singer</span><span style="font-weight: bold;">. In 1948 and 1949, he was voted \u201cBest Male Band Vocalist\u201d by \u201cDownbeat.\u201d By 1951, Al wanted more money. Duke did not think Al could do better, so Al left and started his solo career. </span></p>
<p style="margin: 0;"><span style="font-weight: bold;"> </span></p>
<p style="margin: 0;"><span style="font-weight: bold;">He put out several albums from 1952-1955, but they were not immediate successes. He went back to singing in small clubs around the country. </span></p>
<p style="margin: 0;"><span style="font-weight: bold;"> </span></p>
<p style="margin: 0;"><span style="font-weight: bold;">In 1955, Al bought a house in Teaneck, New Jersey, with money he earned from his Billboard pop hit, \u201cUnchained Melody,\u201d the song from the movie \u201cUnchained.\u201d By 1956, he had earned enough money from his second solo Billboard pop hit, \u201cHe,\u201d to finish paying off the house which he lived in for the next 40 years.</span></p>
<p style="margin: 0;"><span style="font-weight: bold;"> </span></p>
<p style="margin: 0;"><span style="font-weight: bold;">Frank Sinatra signed Al when other record companies were shying away from the vocal civil rights leader (see below) as one of Sinatra\u2019s first solo artists on the Reprise label. Sinatra called Al and Ray Charles his \u201ctwo ace pilots.\u201d Al\u2019s first record on Reprise was \u201cMonday Every Day.\u201d </span></p>
<p style="margin: 0;"><span style="font-weight: bold;"> </span></p>
<p style="margin: 0;"><span style="font-weight: bold;">The young people were listening more to rock and roll and not the smooth jazz songs with \u201cintelligent\u201d lyrics that he liked to sing. His recording labels encouraged him to go with the times. Al said rock and roll was just a passing fad and he would not record that kind of music. </span></p>
<p style="margin: 0;"><span style="font-weight: bold;"> </span></p>
<p style="margin: 0;"><span style="font-weight: bold;">By the 1970s his smoking and drinking took a toll on Al\u2019s voice. He continued to record albums such as one with blind multi-instrumentalist Rahsaan Roland Kirk (1972) and pianist Hank Jones (1984). Al performed at the Newport Jazz Festival in 1973 and 1976. But his career was slowing down.</span></p>
<p style="margin: 0;"><span style="font-weight: bold;"> </span></p>
<p style="margin: 0;"><span style="font-weight: bold;">Al sang \u201cNobody Knows the Trouble I\u2019ve Seen\u201d and \u201cWhen the Saints Go Marching In\u201d at Louis Armstrong\u2019s 1971 funeral. One of his last appearances was at New York City\u2019s Lincoln Center (1999) as part of the centennial celebration of Duke Ellington\u2019s birth. Al received a Pioneer Award from the Rhythm and Blues Foundation (1991), and a Lifetime Achievement Award from the Arkansas Jazz Heritage Foundation (1995).</span></p>
<p style="margin: 0;"><span style="font-weight: bold;"> </span></p>
<p style="margin: 0;"><span style="font-weight: bold;">Al played himself in the movie </span><span style="font-weight: bold; font-style: italic;">Texas Tenor: The Illinois Jacquet Story</span><span style="font-weight: bold;"> (1992). He has a star at 1650 Vine Street on the Hollywood Walk of Fame.</span></p>
<p style="margin: 0;"><span style="font-weight: bold;"> </span></p>
<p style="margin: 0;"><span style="font-weight: bold;">Hitting the Pavement for Civil Rights</span></p>
<p style="margin: 0;"><span style="font-weight: bold;"> </span></p>
<p style="margin: 0;"><span style="font-weight: bold;">Al was one of the first high profile Black entertainers to publicly get involved in the civil rights movement. He joined the Alabama Christian Movement for Human Rights. He, along with other now famous Civil Rights leaders, Rev. Martin Luther King Jr., Rev. Wyatt Tee Walker, Rev. Ralph Abernathy, and others descended on Birmingham, Alabama, in April of 1963 to bring nationwide attention to the Black Civil Rights movement. </span></p>
<p style="margin: 0;"><span style="font-weight: bold;"> </span></p>
<p style="margin: 0;"><span style="font-weight: bold;">On April 10, 1963, Al was arrested along with eight others protesting outside of the Birmingham Trailways Bus Station. Al held a sign that said, \u201cEqual Opportunity and Human Dignity.\u201d He and the other protesters lined up against the wall, not blocking the door. They were told to move on and when they did not, nine of them were arrested. When the police realized that Al was the blind jazz singer they let him go saying, \u201ccouldn\u2019t leave a blind man out on the streets without anybody to take care of him.\u201d To al, this was the ultimate in discrimination. As a Black man, he could not even be prosecuted because he was blind.</span></p>
<p style="margin: 0;"><span style="font-weight: bold;"> </span></p>
<p style="margin: 0;"><span style="font-weight: bold;">The next day, an Alabama judge, W. A. Jenkins issued a blanket injunction barring all forms of racial protests in Birmingham. Al, along with the leaders of the Alabama Christian Movement for Human Rights and the Southern Christian Leadership Conference were named, specifically in the judgement. </span></p>
<p style="margin: 0;"><span style="font-weight: bold;"> </span></p>
<p style="margin: 0;"><span style="font-weight: bold;">Al knew of the judge\u2019s orders and still led a group of over 20 picketers to again hold their signs up on the city streets. Some groups of protesters went to the White only; lunch counters and the operators shut the counters down. Another group went to the city library, whites only, and picked out books and sat at tables. That group was gone before the police got there. Again, Al was taken into custody, but the police took him back to his hotel under the instruction of City Commissioner Eugene \u201cBull\u201d Connor. Within that past week, more than 138 Black citizens had been arrested for civil disobedience.</span></p>
<p style="margin: 0;"><span style="font-weight: bold;"> </span></p>
<p style="margin: 0;"><span style="font-weight: bold;">Al stayed in Birmingham to support the protesters and perform a concert to raise funds for the cause. </span></p>
<p style="margin: 0;"><span style="font-weight: bold;"> </span></p>
<p style="margin: 0;"><span style="font-weight: bold;">Some biographies claim that Al was arrested in 1959 under a Civil Rights Charge. Al was arrested, but for a different reason. In late December of that year, he took a ride home from a hotel gig near Ridgefield, New Jersey, with strangers. Al noted the car stopped three times at gas stations. He got out of the car at the third station, heard glass break, and left the group. Police responded to the three gas station burglaries and found Al walking beside the road. He was taken into custody as a material witness. No charges were filed against him. </span></p>
<p style="margin: 0;"><span style="font-weight: bold;"> </span></p>
<p style="margin: 0;"><span style="font-weight: bold;">From humble beginnings and societal restrictions, Al Hibbler is an \u201cunchained\u201d hero of the 21</span><sup style="font-weight: bold;">st</sup><span style="font-weight: bold;"> century.</span></p>
