Hi everyone,
I want to drop a note to mention how this specific scholarship program has had an incredible and irreplaceable impact on my life.
The money certainly helped me to graduate from college with less debt than I would have otherwise had, but meeting the National Federation of the Blind was the greatest thing that this scholarship did for me. In our state, we don't have a ton of allies out there telling all blind people to join the NFB, so finding people through this scholarship program is very important.
That convention weekend changed my life, especially the conversation I had with Al De Lucia about my struggle for accommodations in the college classroom while we stood outside the hotel for our fire drill, the banquet speech from Parnell Diggs about how he was a kid who was told that his career dreams were off-limits, and the conversation that I had after the banquet with Trevor Attenberg, Chris Kuell, and Nathanael Wales.
I know it can be easy to forward around emails. I don't want to disrupt whatever action plan the affiliate has for spreading the word, but I urge everyone to enthusiastically play your role in making sure that every eligible blind student, like the Justin Salisbury who went to high school in Storrs, learns about this scholarship program and applies.
Love,
Justin

2024 ACADEMIC SCHOLARSHIP PROGRAM
The National Federation of the Blind of Connecticut (NFB of CT) is an organization dedicated to creating opportunities for all blind persons. In the furtherance of this goal, we have established our scholarship program. Recipients of NFB of CT scholarships need not be members of the National Federation of the Blind of Connecticut. NFB of CT scholarships are judged on the basis of academic quality and service to the community.
Steve Famiglietti Memorial Scholarship, in the amount of $3500, is given in loving memory by his mother. Steve taught many of us in adaptive technology, and contributed to many of our state conventions with technology updates and stories of his favorite hobby, storm chasing.
Woodward Memorial Scholarship, in the amount of $3000, is given in loving memory of Bruce and Betty Woodward for the many ways that they helped improve the lives of blind people in Connecticut.
C. Rodney Demarest Memorial Scholarship, in the amount of $3000, is given in loving memory by his family and friends. Blind since 18, he ran his own business for many years, read NFB-Newsline® faithfully, was always well-informed and was admired by his many friends.
Zukowski Family Foundation Scholarship, in the amount of $2500. The Zukowski Family Foundation is honored to provide a scholarship for a Connecticut blind student.
Doris Higley Memorial Scholarship, in the amount of $2000, is given in loving memory of a friend of Mrs. Higley.
