We also like to see the joy that often comes with the discovery of assistive technology. We are pleased to be offering a new service that is designed to make the beginning stages of AT and AAC implementation more immediate; and hopefully, it will allow us to stick around a little longer to see some of the smiles that result from increased independence.<br> <br> An <strong>AT</strong> or <strong>AAC Kickstart</strong> is a combination of consultation and coaching/training services. It provides a student or individual and his or her support team with direct guidance during the beginning stages of assistive technology implementation. While we would prefer to conduct this service in-person, we are confident that it can be an effective virtual service for many students and individuals.<br> <br> Typically, an AT or AAC Kickstart will begin with a two-hour consultation, during which a NEAT specialist will suggest and introduce technology tools and/or features that can help the student or individual compensate for his or her specific disabilities. A written summary of those tools will then be provided, followed by two hours of follow-up coaching/training to “kickstart” their use in school or everyday life. Connections with family, friends, colleagues, strangers, and even pets have a direct impact on our quality of life and state of well-being. Connections and communication are always important, but they have become particularly impacted in our new world of social distancing. To help our community build new connections, NEAT created a virtual AAC Summer Bash to replace last year’s in-person, “Speech at the Beach” event. <br> <br> Over the course of three days in July, individuals who use AAC and their communication partners had an opportunity to participate in activities, ask/answer questions, and share ideas. Summer-themed activities included reading “Pete the Cat at the Beach,” chatting about Olaf from Frozen singing “In Summer” on YouTube, and taking turns creating a virtual ice cream cone! Additional memories were created while the group prepared a snack (both real and pretend!) and engaged with Amazon Alexa for an “Animal Workout.” All the while, of course, making comments, directing the actions of others, describing elements of the task, and more.<br> <br> Implementation strategies, including modeling tips and manageable instruction through a NEAT AAC at Home Planner, were embedded throughout the sessions. Parents and professionals contributed their own tricks and ideas, making it a meaningful experience for many. Seeing them, unprompted, wave and say, “hi!” to one another even though they had never met in person was priceless, both to them and to the communication partners who observed these ongoing interactions. One child interjecting to tell a knock-knock joke via AAC to the others was also one moment we will never forget! <br> <br> For the clinicians and other professionals, including NEAT’s own SLP/AAC Specialists, it was a refreshing reminder that teaching communication skills must remain fun and engaging. There is always something new to learn regarding ways to teach the power of communication, and there is no better way to do it than by hearing about the experiences of others. For the parents/guardians, a new network of support was formed, coupled with a chance to have fun with their kids amongst hectic schedules<br> . <br> For NEAT, the opportunity to connect with the AAC Community in a new way was invigorating as it sparked a unique perspective of AAC service delivery. Child to child, parent to parent, professional to professional, parent to professional…the list of new connections formed by the 155 registrants from 20 U.S. states and 5 countries could go on and on. Now, let’s embrace the connections we currently have, and push ourselves to continue forming them despite our global time of uncertainty.<br> <br> A heartfelt thank you goes to the Farmington Bank Community Foundation, whose grant funds made this entire event both free and possible. There are several steps involved in obtaining a guide dog.<br> <br> First, I filled out the application form and mailed it back to Fidelco. Second, I went to my physician and had a physical exam. Third, I contacted my orientation and mobility instructor from the Bureau of Education and Services for the Blind and asked him to please send my mobility report to Fidelco. Forth, I contacted several individuals and requested that they write letters of reference and send them to Fidelco on my behalf. Each of the steps listed above were required as part of the application process. My failure to complete any of these steps meant that my application was incomplete and that I wouldn’t be considered for a guide dog. <br> <br> Once Fidelco had received all of the information that was required for the application, they contacted me and scheduled an in home interview. The interview happened about a month after I was contacted and it lasted about 4 hours. The interviewer came to my home, she discussed the Fidelco Guide Dog Foundation, she discussed how the training program worked, she discussed many aspects of owning a dog and she took me on a Juno walk. A Juno walk is a walk where a student walks with a trainer. The trainer holds one end of a guide dog harness and the student holds the handle of the harness in the same way that he or she would hold it as though it were on a dog. During my Juno walk, the trainer gave me some commands to issue during our walk. As we walked together, the trainer was observing my walking speed, as well as, my gate. She instructed me to give commands to her. I said “Juno forward”, and she began to walk forward, “Juno left”, and we turned left, “Juno right”, and we turned right. The walk lasted about 15 minutes. After it was over, we went back to my home and the interview was concluded. Now it was a matter of knowing that both my application and in home interview were completed and I had to wait to see whether or not I would be accepted into the program and be placed on the waiting list to obtain a guide dog.<br> <br> A few months later, I received a phone call, telling me that I was accepted into the program and that they would begin looking for a dog, that they thought would be a good match for me. This was exciting news, now I really was counting the days before the next phone call! A few days later, Fidelco called me again, to tell me that they found a dog, that they felt was a good match for me. They told me that the dog was a female and that she was 3 years old. I got so excited during the phone call, that I told the instructor that I could begin training with the new dog the very next day. After hanging up the phone, I realized that I had to work the next day so that meant that training could not begin until I had talked with my boss to see when my work schedule would allow me to begin to train with the new dog.<br> <br> On July 14, 2003, my dog and the trainer from Fidelco arrived at 7:00 AM in the morning. The dog’s name was Whitlee, she was a German Shepherd and she was with me until she was 11.5 years old. <br> <br> In the next article, I will tell you about some of the training that Whitlee and I
