List Colleagues:

As many of you may be aware, the National Federation of the Blind (NFB)
has made a policy decision to cease publishing the Voice of the Diabetic
Magazine. This statement is not designed to solicit further editorial
comment about this decision on this list; it is offered here as a simple
point of fact.

Since our organization does remain committed to serving the interests of
blind Diabetics, medical professionals, industry representatives, and
others interested in the subject of Diabetes, blindness, and any
relationship that may exist between these two conditions, I am pleased
to advise that the Braille Monitor Magazine, the general purpose monthly
house organ of the NFB, will publish on a regular basis material of
interest to the constituency that the former Voice of the Diabetic once
so ably served. A more detailed announcement about this policy will be
printed in the April 2009 edition of the Braille Monitor. A specific
publishing pattern about blindness and Diabetic-related matters has not
yet been fully determined, but we plan to regularly include the kind of
material that was once published in the Voice of the Diabetic for the
benefit of our members and other interested parties. We hope that this
new feature in the Braille Monitor will go a great distance in
satisfying the critical needs and interests of the former Voice of the
Diabetic readership.

The editorial staff of the Braille Monitor generally welcomes
contributions from anybody, and we would particularly appreciate
receiving submissions from people in this diverse community on the topic
of Diabetes, blindness, and the relationship between these two
conditions that may be appropriate for publication in the Braille
Monitor. Because we remain a general purpose political magazine, and
since space for Diabetes-specific material will be somewhat limited, we
cannot guarantee that everything submitted will be printed. All
submissions will be subject to editing for space and clarity. Generally,
our editorial deadline is the last Friday of the month; for example,
materials submitted by the last Friday in February could possibly appear
in the April edition. We look forward to receiving many items of current
technological, inspirational, or other general interest to blind
Diabetics and other supporters.

If you are not currently subscribed to the Braille Monitor, you may do
so by sending an Email request to Marsha Dyer at MDyer at nfb.org; you may
also call the National Center for the Blind to subscribe to the magazine
by dialing (410) 659-9314. Please indicate your format preference; the
Braille Monitor is available in ink-print, Braille, and on recorded
four-track cassette. The magazine can also be read and downloaded from
our Website at http://www.nfb.org.

Should you have questions about this announcement or require further
information, please feel free to be in touch with me. My contact details
may be found below in my signature block. We sincerely hope that this
publishing measure will go a long way to serving the important needs of
this valued community. Thank you.

With Kind Regards,
