Look at http://www.joslin.org and http://www.diabetes.org and perhaps
http://www.diabetesselfmanagement.com and do a search on "alcohol". I
know in particular that the Joslin site has info on it.
In general, one or two drinks are usually OK but, as you discovered,
alcohol inhibits the liver's ability to release stored glycogen so if
you go low, your body doesn't compensate since the liver is busy
metabolizing the alcohol. In fact, whisky, Scotch, vodka and the like
have virtually no carbs. Beer and wine on the other hand do have carbs
and so one must take account of them, theoretically, at least. I saved
one article about alcohol; I'll see if I can dig it up.
Incidentally, I do drink low-carb beer and bourbon. But it doesn't seem
to affect me much. Each person must figure it out for himself/herself
since we're all different.

Subject: [Diabetes-talk] looking for info on diabetes and alcohol
Last Monday, I went over to a friend's place for the afternoon, and the
evening meal. During the course of the time, I had two cans of beer,
and
didn't think anymore about it.
Later that night, I ran my usual evening glucose test, and found I had a
reading of 61, and, I did feel like it to.
Is the moral of the story that any drink is a bad idea, or where can I
go to
get info on this subject.
I have been an officer in the fraternal order of eagles, but I haven't
been
active since my diagnosis, because I'm not sure about having a few
drinks
with the members. I don't abuse alcohol, but I don't know how to deal
with
it now. Please advise.
I apologize to all on the list for being so lengthy in this question
Paul
