[Diabetes-talk] High sugars in the wake of skipping a snack?

Dotty:
Although the mechanism isn't fully understood, the broad picture is that
when under stress, the body tends to produce corticosteroids like
epinephrine (adrenaline) and cortisol. In fact, amounts of cortisol above
normal concentrations are a good indicator of stress. The good news is that
these hormones prepare the body for "flight or fight". The bad news is that
(a) we no longer need to flee or fight as often as we did 50,000 years ago
and (b) corticosteroids tend (both directly and indirectly) to raise the
level of glucose in the blood. After all, if one is being pursued by a
saber-toothed tiger, one tends to want to have plenty of energy to run!
Obviously, this is bad news for diabetics since we can't automatically
produce enough insulin to cope.
The bottom line is that we should reduce stress as much as possible, all
other things being equal.
