[Diabetes-talk] A Metformin Question

All:

I submit that, although made partly in gest, Bridgit's comment below doesn't
make a lot of sense, at least with respect to insurance companies.
Basically, insurance is legalized gambling on the part of insurance
companies -- the patient pays premiums and the insurance companies gamble
that they will make more from those premiums than they will have to pay out.
Hence, they aren't interested in paying out more than they absolutely have
to. So they aren't in cahoots with Bihg Pharma. They don't make money from
diabetes drugs -- they spend it.

As for big Pharma: saying that they don't want to work on cures doesn't
make sense, either. Big Pharma doesn't generally do the sort of pure
research that is necessary to find cures for diseases. That's left to pure
scientists and those involved in applied medical research. For practical
purposes, this means schools of medicine and the biological science
departments at universities and colleges. So the stream of money funding
research toward a cure for diabetes (if one can be found) has nothing to do
with the monetary stream coming to Big Pharma as a result of manufacture of
diabetes drugs.

So the whole line of reasoning that the medical establishment is in cahoots
with the major pharmaceutical companies to suppress diabetes cures is just
another way to acceptably vent one's spleen about diabetes and exercise the
imaginations and paranoiac tendencies of conspiracy theory freaks!

Sometimes the side affects sound worse than the condition. *smile* I
think Jeff Foxworthy makes a joke about that.

My comment was in jest before, but I know it is a hot, but controversial
issue that insurance and drug companies are looking to medicate over
cure because less illness means less money for them.

I would recommend if anyone ever feels uncomfortable with a drug, they
research it, speak with multiple doctors and finally, make an informed
decision.

The reasons you hear all the commercials and explaining all of this came
out during the HIPAA Privacy Laws, which also includes that drug
companies must post in all media forms the side affects to the drugs.

These drug companies want our money. Instead of focusing on more
cures,
they keep us alive-- just alive-- so we keep paying for drugs! LOL

um if you listen to all the commercials on tv they cause a lot of
issues
  as well.

The problem is that it causes Cancer in Mice and Rats and it hasn't
yet
been proved that is causes other issues in humans.

So I would worry more about you keeping your sugars down and the diet
level, the stress alone will give you problems of worrying about it.

I am on transplant drugs for my kidney transplant, and every year I
have
to get check for Cancer, I know the risks involved, but guess what I
am
not on dialysis and haven't been in 6 years and I am alive.

Hi I have been on Metformin for 8 years. I have read now and then
  that
Metformin over time damages the liver and can cause some memory
  problems.
But I have noticed none of those in myself, and annual physical
  evaluations,
plus diabetes evaluations every four months have shown nothing
  negative
except for my troubles keeping calory intake evenly distributed.
  KnowKnock
    on wood!

However, research on meds is ongoing, so I will keep watching out
for
official indications of medication interactions. - Bill Lewis
