[Diabetes-talk] Accessible Diabetes Resources, and some Questions

Diabetes is a very individual thing. Although there are some common
principles, exactly which diet and medication regimen works for which people
is a matter of trial and error: each person's diabetes is unique. Therefore,
start out with the diet your doctor, dietitian and/or certified diabetes
educator recommends and stick with it for a month or two. If it's working,
i.e., your blood sugar is under control and meeting targets and you are
losing weight (if that's a goal), bravo. But if after a while you find that
your blood glucose is still less than decently controlled (note that I did
not say perfect), then work with your medical care personnel or read up and
try other diets or medications, subject to working with your doctor, of
course. Diabetes is one of the few diseases where much of its treatment is
really in the hands of the patient himself/herself.

If you are newly-diagnosed or know someone who is, I recommend Gretchen
Becker's book "the First Year - Type 2 diabetes: A Guide for the
Newly-Diagnosed". I believe it's DB-64186 on the BARD site. It's a great
combination of practical advice and fairly technical diabetes information
presented in an easy-to-read style.

Well said. Evidently, the devil is in the details, since every book seems to

advocate different diets. How do you sort it all out? Any thoughts?
