I did it a year ago. It wasn't that bad. Just check your sugars. If you get low just drink some water with a little sugar. Clear liquids are better. Sprite would work too. But fizz of soda type drinks may affect your stomach with the yucky stuff. ;)

Hey Gang:

Bern here!

I'm having my first colonoscopy this Monday morning at 9:00 am after we get the kids on their bus in the morning. Bill's taking me down. However, I've got, perhaps, a combined question here. Firstly, the day before the test, Sunday, I'm not allowed to eat any solid food at all that day. Instead, I must drink some awful unforgetable stuff to make me "empty" out, so to speak without too much other graphics. I can also drink water, I believe. I also understand the stuff isn't sugar free either. So, anybody have any suggestions as to how to maintain reasonable numbers? Or, for that matter, whether or not to skip the rapid-acting, (humolog)? and just maintain my night-time Lantus? Anyone done this before, I would think?

Do not do the humilog.
If you take a pill that morning go for it, but they asked me not to
take a pill that night.
The only pills I could take the next morning was the blood pressure pills.
You can have chicken broth no red jellow or red of any kind,
You can have jello though.
I kept testing so when I saw I was getting to low, I stopped the junk drink.
I had cleaned out enough they could do the test.
Hope this helps.
now sense I have a horrible sense of humor, when the nurse shared with
me, that I can't drive for the rest of the day, my reply was
"I believe I won't"
then she was embarrassed, and I was laughing silly.
I came home and had breakfast.
Just kicked back for the rest of the day.

Yo Bern!
I hate to drink that stuff that empties you out. My dr. said to chase it
with a coke, as you are not eating anything!
That will give you some carbs and sugar.
She was not concerned about a couple highs with the coke, and the added
stress of the colonoscopy.
I had the pump when I did mine, but it was several years ago and all I can
say is I had to adjust, so whatever you do to adjust, I guess that's what
you do!
Miss U!

Interesting that coke was mentioned, that is better than Pepsi?
If you are after sugars to make sure you don't get to low, can you do
juice orange?
Anything like that?

Coke was just my personal choice, but I guess you could use pepsi.
That stuff tastes so horrible, the coke neutralizes the taste. I'm afraid
orange juice would make you hurl.

Just skip the rapid-acting insulin and take your Lantus or levimir or whatever long-acting you use. Don't think the stuff that cleans you out has much sugar; I wouldn't worry about it. I've had several colonoscopies and a partial colectomy so been there, done that. Hang in there!

Hi Bern,
I would ask the Gastroenterologist's Zfice if they can give you any suggestions. I know that you can mix some of these products with Crblestal Lite or Generic, (one without the sugar.) I also believe they have some tablets that are sometimes given for this process.)
Just be sure that you do not ingest anything red because it will appear to be bood.
I believe you can also have broth. When I had mine in 2003 I was allowed to have Jello.
Because you are very limited you might want to consider Jello with sugar added.

Hi,
I wouldn't do Orange Juice or anything that could potentially have a red cast. I.e. Cranberry, cherry, apple, cranapple.
I was specifically told not to eat Orange Jello.

Except for water, I was told not to eat or drink anything other than the
stuff you choke down to cause you to empty yourself out! Actually, I didn't
find the stuff that bad except it was rather salty -- or at least that's how
my taste buds interpreted the high mineral content in the stuff. I just
sucked the stuff down according to the schedule and made frequent trips to
the john which, of course, was the idea! As I say, although I know plenty of
folks who practically gag on the stuff, I didn't find it all that bad except
for the quantity one had to shclep down.

I'm glad you're doing this, though. But for a colonoscopy, I might not be a

Hi,
I wouldn't do Orange Juice or anything that could potentially have a red
cast. I.e. Cranberry, cherry, apple, cranapple.
I was specifically told not to eat Orange Jello.

Coke was just my personal choice, but I guess you could use pepsi.
That stuff tastes so horrible, the coke neutralizes the taste. I'm afraid
orange juice would make you hurl.

Yo Bern!
I hate to drink that stuff that empties you out. My dr. said to chase it
with a coke, as you are not eating anything!
That will give you some carbs and sugar.
She was not concerned about a couple highs with the coke, and the added
stress of the colonoscopy.
I had the pump when I did mine, but it was several years ago and all I can
say is I had to adjust, so whatever you do to adjust, I guess that's what
you do!
Miss U!

With the cleaner stuff I used, they gave you a flavor packet that you added
to this dry powder and then added water and shook it till it all mixed up
nicely. The flavor was sort of a gaggy cherry, but it wasn't anything I'd
want to drink any other time, and for me that was good. I kept it very
cold, taking it out of the fridge just about ten minutes before drinking
each glass, and I had to drink 16, 8 at night and 8 in the morning. It's
really awful! But once you've survived that, the test is lots easier than
the prep.

The day before you can have clear liquids, so broth, Jello, even juices (but
not with pulp. My A1C is normal, so I may not be your best advisor, but I
needed something in my stomach before I did the stuff. I ate two or three
times that day and each time I had some broth, some Jello and 8 ounces of
juice (mine was Peach-Mango). Once you start drinking the stuff your
stomach feels quite full.

I wouldn't have thought Coke would be acceptable, but when I went in for my
last colonoscopy, the nurse told me I could have drunk the stuff with vodka!

Good luck.

Sandi

My husband had to have that test, and actually of all things, he had it done
on his birthday. I've never done it myself but I do remember he was given a
combination of laxatives to take and basically had to be near the bathroom
all night and some into the next morning. He could have water, chicken
broth, Jell-O (not red though so stay away from cherry); I think we used
orange and lemon and or lime, clear soda (we used 7-up),. Like someone else
said, nothing red because that dye can be mistaken for blood. He too would
say the worst part of the test was the preparation. He doesn't remember the
actual procedure, just being told to lay on his side and then next thing he
remembered he was waking up. He was really woozy when we brought him home,
but that wore off and he was later able to eat regular food again.

Good luck to you.

Interesting. For one of my colonoscopies, the good doctor couldn't quite see
all of it so he had me help him hold the colon in the right position by
pressing on a certain area in the abdomen. So I was awake, if a bit sleepy.

Hey! Skip the coke; just drink the vodka!

They told me not to eat anything -- even broth or jello. And there are
different regimens, depending upon what stuff one is taking. I was done
gulping the stuff down by four of the morning I went in. I must have drunk a
gallon of that stuff.

HeyBern! Have Bill take some cellphone pictures of you in the process! Just
think of how much money we could raise for DAN by bidding on those pictures!
Or perhaps we could scalp you by having you bid to *not* give away the
pictures!

Mike

Good luck.

Sandi

Oh dear! That might be kicking a person when she's down!

The protocol I did for my first two tests wasn't so bad. But between the
second and third, they discovered that it ruined people's kidneys, so I had
to drink the gallon of stuff this last time! Ah, it's wonderful having all
kinds of diseases in your family history!

Bern, they should explain carefully to you what you need to do not only at
your doctor's office, but also at the pharmacy. I'm sure they've provided
this lovely stuff to people with diabetes before, so either the doc or the
pharmacist should be able to help you decide what to do. If they'd told me
I couldn't have anything, I'd just have curled up and died right there!

I've known people who were awake and watched the whole procedure. But
frankly, having had little sleep the night before, I think I'd sleep without
anesthesia!

Hey! If needed, I can go for days without eating. I suppose I do get hungry
but I'm enough of an absent-minded professor that if something interesting
is going on or I'm reading an interesting book, someone often has to remind
me to eat or drink. Yes, it's true: food tastes great but reading a book is
more interesting.

Mike

Hi,
I think that stuff is awful. I am glad you are getting this done though because I watched my friend suffer and die from Colon Cancer. She waited too long and didn't follow doctor's orders.
If you get tested and do things early you will be thankful if they find anything and can treat it.
If in doubt, check with your doctor.
