Well, it really depends on what you buy. Only some artificial 
sweeteners cause diaria but some leave a funny taste, and yes, ounce 
for ounce anything like that is more expensive, mostly because these 
things aren't made in the large amounts as they're regularly sweetened 
counterparts.
As for cough syrup, we here in Canada have Buckley's cough mixture, and 
if you've ever been around horses, well, to put it bluntly it tastes 
like horse piss smells, but it works, and most certainly doesn't have 
any sweetness to it. Their slogan is, it tastes awful but it works.
