Ah ... I should have guessed. New York State is one of the seemingly more
difficult states or, put another way, seems to have more obtuse/stubborn
insurance companies. The head of the Diabetes Action Network in your state
is, I believe, Mindy Jacobsen, mailto:mindyjoy at nyc,rr.com or Cheryl

latest on what the NY DAN affiliate has done so far to mitigate the
accessible meter vs. insurance problem. Federal legislation to fix the
problem doesn't look likely at this point so we're proceeding
state-by-state.

I live in New York State.  Admitedly to be fair to the person I spoke with

at the insurance company, probably all she saw was that it did audible

readouts and figured that was all I would need.  She'd never heard of any of

these meters that were mentioned either, and I wouldn't have known myself

(or thought to ask), whether or not I'd be able to do things like set the

time or date.  I probably would have assumed I could have and been upset

when I couldn't.  I wouldn't have known that information if I hadn't asked

about it, so thanks for pointing that issue out.  It probably wasn't

something she would have thought about either.  Knowing a reason why

something won't be a working solution might be a better argument to take

back to my doctor, and ultimately the insurance company, than just saying "I

want this one" without him or I or someone else understanding and being able

to explain why it wouldn't work.  As it is, the pharmacy I work with says

that they carry the solo meter and the manager over there said he'd work on

getting me one.  I'm not sure how he'll be able to do that but he has pulled

off other things before so I'm going to give them a chance and see how it

goes.

Hello, Julie. 

Your insurance company reveals the usual ignorance about the needs of blind

diabetics. Neither the Advocate nor the Embrace meters are fully accessible.

They can speak the current reading but do not allow a blind person to

independently review readings from memory nor do they allow a blind person

to independently set time, date and other meter parameters. 

You should get your prescribing physician to write a prescription stating

that you specifically need the Solus V2; that no other meter is acceptable.

Ideally, your physician should be willing to call your insurance company

directly and jawbone their personnel till they cry "Uncle"! Often this is

enough to get the company to acquiesce. If not, I would be glad to try to

help you. 

What state do you live in? 

If all else fails, you could see if the Prodigy Voice or Autocode are

covered. If the Autocode is covered, you could buy the Voice because it uses

the same strips as the Autocode. The Prodigy Voice is also fully accessible.
