Hi there!
Joy, you beat me to it. I too use the sides of my fingers. Now, I do have
pretty big lumps on the sides of my fingers now but they don't get in the
way of touching anything or of reading braille. It's also much less painful
to use the sides of your fingers than the pads. The main problem using that
webbing between the thumb and first finger is that it's a rather small area
and will get beat up pretty quickly. When you have your class, someone will
probably talk with you about coming up with a system for who gets pricked
when. For me, Monday and Friday are the outside of my right hand. Tuesday
and Saturday are the outside of the fingers on my left hand. Wednesday is
the inside of the fingers on my right and Thursday, the inside of my left.
Sunday gets divided up among whoever on the inside got the least amount of
battering during the week. On each day, first test is my little finger and I
work my way through my hand as the day goes on. I don't test my thumbs
Usually diabetes education people have a variety of lancing devices around
and may let you play with them to see what works best for you.
Just remember to be patient with yourself in the beginning. It does take
some trial and error to get your system down. And here's sending good
thoughts for a happy, healthy baby!

Hi!
I have been testing my blood using the sides of each of my fingers for all
most 30 years and I have no calluses. I have no problem reading Braille.
Fondly, Joy
