[Diabetes-talk] whole lemons

I do remember that story--it's great! One of my doctors, after I told him
my eyes were plastic, looked again. So I popped one out for him! I do know
what's in my head! He was fascinated, and was my doctor for nearly 30
years. A Type 1, by the way!

Sandi has already heard this story as I think I used it at the Iowa
convention -- or was it the national convention or Missouri convention, but
...

I had a normal A1C in the summer of 2004 and landed in the hospital in
March, 2005, in DKA. I wasn't quite comatose but was getting there quickly.
A young ophthalmologist was looking in my left eye and was obviously
puzzled. I came out of the fog long enough to say to him: Sir! If I've got
diabetic retinopathy in that eye, you should tell me PDQ because I'll be in
a world of hurt because that eye is a silicone implant!" The guy jumped back
about three feet, quite chagrined, both because he didn't catch it and
because he didn't expect someone in DKA to have a sense of humor. I got
quite a belly-laugh out of the whole thing, even as they installed me in a
private room and started ramming the insulin and fluids to me!

I've always had prostheses, and have had a couple of doctors look into my
eyes, too. And when I got a new doctor a couple of years ago, I told her
"Well, we know one thing for sure. I won't go blind from diabetes." There
was a long pause, and she said "Oh?" I told her I've been blind all my life

from retinoblastoma, so diabetes can't do that to me! Then we had a good
laugh.

I had very much the same experience. I thought I had some usable vision in
my right eye -- to the point that my eye doctor thought there might be hope
of fixing the lens and cornea surgically. Six months later, the eye broke
down internally and had to be removed. Nothing changed. Agree with the
quality of the prosthesis -- it's fooled a couple of eye doctors. That's
really funny when the guy starts to examine it with the flashlight.

You know, growing up I used to think I had light perception. Well, because I
could tell when the sun was out and sometimes I could tell when lights were
left on. Then at age 26, I had both eyes removed. Surprise! Nothing changed.
I gather the skin on our faces does something in the way of light detection
as well. But it's amazing what we learn sometimes, isn't it. But I do
remember the routine of having to wear sun glasses. And today's prosthetic
eyes are wonderful.
