[Diabetes-talk] Safe Shot sold by Maxiaids

This is a great idea Colleen. However, I think we need to clear up
one thing. I have some concerns about the Count-A-Dose for a number of
reasons.

Firstly, it appears that the syringe makers are using different plastic
casings which no longer fit properly into the cradle of the Count-A-Dose.

Secondly, if you can find a syringe anymore that you can make fit, these
great syringe makers have taken it upon themselves to shorten the
needles from one-half inch to 5/16ths inch. So that when even if the
syringe fits into the cradle of the Count-A-Dose, the needle isn't long
enough anymore to pierce the cork of the insulin vial to enable one to
draw up the syringe.

Unfortunately, Gang, this is what we're currently up against and I'm
wracking my brain as to how I'm going to get around it. Dawn and I
briefly talked at one point and for the amount she needs to maintain her
diabetes, believe it or not, I'm wondering if it would simply be
cheaper--more cost effective for the powers that be, to start using the
pump.

However, this opens up another Pandora's box here because we all know
there's not one completely accessible pump out there for us and
Unfortunately, the medical/pharmaceutical community, quite frankly,
doesn't give a rat's ...!!! If the rest of you have any helpful
suggestions, give a shout!!

Hello Everyone,
Has anyone ever used Safe Shot sold by Maxiaids. I am looking for
Equipment for a blind Diabetic to measure her Insulin independently.
The person at Maxiaids tried but couldn't get a lot of information for me.
I know this item has three presets and that it is only $12.95.
I would like to know if anyone has any more information.
Who manufactures it, can the patient get their syruues from their local
Pharmacy, Can the Physician or his Designee change the preset if Insulin
amount changes, are the syringues 1 cc?
I am thinking that maybe Dawn can be taught to use the count a dose for
45 units and the Safe Shot for 100 units if we get a little more
information about the Safe Shot?
Is the Safe Shot on the order of the device AFB sold years ago?
How do you measure an odd number of units, for example 45 units. Is
every two units one click?
Who would be able to teach Dawn how to use the Count a Dose.
So far no one who has looked at it has a clue.
I am a Diabetic but I do not take Insulin.
The other totally blind Diabetics I know in Toledo have someone measure
their insulin and set it up for them.
Of course I do not know every totally blind diabetic.
The diabetic educator at one of our hospitals said I was the first
totally blind person she ever worked with when she worked with me with
the Prodigy Meter.
Thanks,
Colleen Roth
