[Diabetes-talk] newly diagnosed

Rachel:

Welcome to our list.

The reason you're on a lower dose of metformin for a week is so you'll get
used to it; a few people initially encounter what commercials for bufferin
of 60 years ago used to diplomatically call "lower tract difficulties" when
starting metformin. But most people readily adapt to metformin; it's one of
the first drugs of choice for those diagnosed as "prediabetic" -- whatever
*that* means -- or Type 2 diabetes.

Frankly, I'm appalled that your insurance company wouldn't reimburse you for
a blood glucose meter given that your doctor has placed you on metformin.
Seems to me anyone taking a diabetes drug -- even to prevent diabetes --
ought to be testing his/her blood one or two times a day. Bureaucracy at
work, I guess.

I don't know your financial circumstances but, were I you, I'd just shell
out the $50 to get a Prodigy Voice blood glucose meter from the NFB
Independence market and then buy a couple boxes of Prodigy Autocode strips
(Yes, they'll work in the Voice and pharmacies are more familiar with the
Autocode than with the Voice), even at $20 apiece, so you can check
once-in-a-while. Or you could use your husband's gear, always being sure to
put in a fresh lancet before pricking your finger so you and he are at less
potential for sharing microbes that might cause problems! (grin)

At any rate, please feel free to ask questions and take part in our
discussions, bearing in mind that almost none of us are medical personnel.
We are, in fact, what industry lingo calls a "peer support group".

Glad you're with us.

Hi, all.

Well, I've been recently diagnosed as pre-diabetic. Diabetes isn't new to
me, though, as my husband is type 1.

The doctor is putting me on metformin once a day for a week, and then twice
a day. My insurance won't cover a meter yet because I'm not officially
diabetic.
