Hi Jerry,

I have not had gastric bypass, but am a blind registered dietitian. My
knowledge of the process and all the procedures of bariatric surgery of any
kind (gastric banding, gastric sleeve, etc.) is limited. I do have sighted
friends, however, who have had the different surgeries, and I believe you
will be able to handle things just as they did. I assume that by gastric
bypass you're referring to the rrue-en-Y surgery. This surgery is quite
successful, and often leads to disappearance of diabetes. You will eat
entirely differently after the surgery than you do now, and not just
temporarily. And your health afterward will depend, to some extent, on your
health now.

After the surgery you will eat little, and at first it will be mostly shakes
and other pureed food. Gradually you will be able again to eat regular
foods, but not much at any one time. Getting enough protein and certain
vitamins is a challenge after this surgery.

Before you have the bypass, I hope you will be taught by a knowledgeable
professional about all these things. As the other two responders have said,
however, you should have little trouble with accessibility of the necessary
materials. You may, for example, need to have someone read you the
instructions for using or preparing shakes, depending on what kind you use.
And you will need to learn how much to eat, when to drink, etc. There's a
fair amount to learn, but it won't be different for you than for a sighted
person really.

Good luck!

Sandi

I am looking for blind persons that has had gastal bypass surgery. I want to
know if the surgery was successful and how a blind person dealt with the
life changes involved with such a surgery. Thank you for your comments and
consideration on this subject.

Jerry
