Thanks Mike for all this information. Most of the folks that I see haven't been so good at keeping records so being able to look back at blood sugars is probably a very good thing. Anyway, it will be nice to be able to give information that will help them select the right device for their needs. . Thanks again.

Hello everyone,
I occasionally need to recommend a glucometer to a newly blind person and I'd like to know the in-and-outs about which works best along with advantages dealing with purchase prices and government programs and the like. Any information will be very much appreciated.

Thanks,

Bonnie

Kohlls pharmacy: 866-414-9900

They are Medicare approved.

Bonnie:

First, the word glucometer? is a trademark owned by Bayer; it's sorta like thermos being a trademark name for one brand of insulated vacuum bottles. So I usually say "blood glucose meter" instead.

Second, the "best" blood glucose meter is the one the person with diabetes will use. Aside from that general observation, there are two fully-accessible blood glucose meters -- one is fully-accessible and the other is also with a caveat.

The first fully-accessible meter is the Prodigy Voice. You can purchase it from the NFB Independence Market for something like $50. Also, Advanced diabetic Solutions from Atlanta, Georgia has it as does Independent Living Aids, MaxiAids, etc. A blind/visually impaired person can set it completely and he/she can review all 400 readings from memory without sighted help.
Some pharmacies can get it also but they usually confuse it with the Prodigy Autocode meter which also talks but, like many meters made for the Medicare market (Embrace, Companion, Clevercheck, etc.), they only say the reading
*once* and one needs sighted assistance to review the readings and set up the Autocode. So you need to insist upon the Prodigy Voice. However, the Prodigy Voice can use Prodigy autocode strips and these are farily common; I know CVS Caremark carries Prodigy Autocode strips. Advanced diabetic Solutions carries Prodigy Voice or Prodigy autocode strips but The best deal I've found for Autocode strips is to purchase them from Amazon.

The second accessible meter is the Solus V2. You can purchase it also from Advanced Diabetic Solutions. It is fully accessible (one can set it up and review readings without sight) except that, because the meter handles both English and Spanish, the speech can handle only the last ten readings from memory; the rest are in the meter but one needs sight or needs to use the Solus V2 software when the meter is hooked to a computer to review the rest of the readings without sight.

The Solus V2 allows one to tag readings as before or after meals or other categories and has the ability to set an alarm to remind one when one should test again. However, I tend to consider these last bells and whistles if one keeps a good log (which IMO all diabetics should).

The meter can be purchased from amazon as well as Advanced Diabetic Solutions and other suppliers. However, if one purchases from Amazon, one can't be sure one has the last firmware revision which one needs for the memory review with speech to say the time of each reading.

Earlier today, Eileen Scrivani offered the name of a provider of Solus V2 strips that works with Medicare. My list of such suppliers that work with the Prodigy Voice or Autocode is dated. But, as I say, my experience is the best deal for Autocode strips is on Amazon.

The number I have for Advanced Diabetic Solutions is (888) 377-6382.

Hope this helps.

Mike Freeman
