[Diabetes-talk] Have you gone thru this?

Thanks for the nice compliment. Of course, what I really want is results. <grin>
So I'll just keep trying and working different angles.

I can think of three different ways companies could get started on speech. But they do have to create the entire system of gestures and it isn't trivial. That doesn't mean not do it, mind you. This is where sharing and grants could come together because if they don't, within that famous 5 or 10 years, we could be shut out entirely. And just like blood glucose meters, I would sure hate to be limited to a single choice of pump that we can use. I am meeting with various candidates for Congress here to see if I can sound them out on the issue. It's too important to give up. Sometimes I feel like I'm just banging my head against the wall. But I keep hoping that one of these times, the right idea will fall out. <grin>

Touch screen is the way the world is moving. Apple got on board with accessibility, and it works well. Don't understand why other companies can't. It took a while for Apple, who was initially against accessibility for its touch screen devices, but look now. It shouldn't be that complicated for insulin pumps to include accessibility. And like I keep saying, just like Apple, we don't need separate pumps just for blind diabetics. They just need to create a speaking feature on existing pumps that could be turned off or on. If you want to use the function, great, if not, okay.

And people, even blind people, argue the process would be complicated and costly and the application isn't as easy as some make it seem, but really, it is. Like most companies, it's a matter of them not wanting to more than anything. We are not talking about people needing to shop online, we are talking about diabetes management. This is important and necessary.

But what does blowing off steam here accomplish? Nothing has been done to push for accessibility with pumps or other diabetic devices. When people show creativity and are innovative, like demonstrating how apps could work in tandem with pumps or accessible remotes, the companies tend to shut them down. I'd like to think accessible pumps would be available in 5 to 10 years, but we were told this a decade ago, and nothing has changed. And the few entities working on it, no longer are. Pumps and CGMs continue to develop and grow in popularity, yet nothing is done about accessibility.

Bridgit, as far as I know, it does not have an accessible app. The last time I had my hands on one, it only talked to its own remote. The remote does not beep when you push its buttons so you'd just have to hope you were in the right place. When I looked at the newest model several months ago, they had made it really tricky to turn on because you had to push one of the soft keys after turning it on, and it wasn't always the same soft key. They actually told me that this is because some of their customers moved too fast. Huh? The other bummer about it is that they told me that their next model would be, wait for it! Wait for it! Touch screen. I kind of decided that I didn't want to do all the work to get switched to a pump and then be out of date, unable to use the newest model at all. At least the Tandem T-slim, the other touch screen pump, does have the button on the side like the Animas where you could do a quick meal bolus. Of course we couldn't do anything else, but hey, who's counting? <grin> I did love the feel of that pump though.
Anyway, probably more than you asked for, but I hope I answered your question to the best of my ability.

Does the Omnipod have an accessible app, as someone mentioned on the list?

When you do a correction bolus, do you do an auto-correct, or do you use the touch bolus?

I actually wore an Omnipod for 3 days. At least the pods are smaller than they used to be. They were easy to insert and I do wish Dexcom would take some lessons from them in that regard. <grin> My problems were that there were so many alarms. One if you got out of range of your pod. One if the pod failed. And so on. I couldn't tell them apart. I also found that I wasted quite a bit of insulin. Other than that, I loved it. I found the company to be quite responsive.
But with all pumps, for me, they get compared with my Cozmo. I can do so much more with it. The big deal for me is entering a correction bolus and dealing with knowing there is still insulin on board, so I can either add extra or subtract depending on real life. I can change my basals, change the time settings, enter extended or square wave boluses and more.
So I'm staying with my Cozmo till it dies!
And there are still insurance companies which do not cover the Omnipod because the insulin is in the pod. But it's a great concept. It does have a home button so you can get yourself out of a jam. Many of these pumps are planning to incorporate the Dexcom but as of now, doing so would not help us because we couldn't read their display. But I really would be happy to dump the tubing. I'd probably lose my remote though. <grin> Veronica

J,

Thanks about the info on the Omnipod system, I would just check your facts on what you reported about the Omnipod auto checks your blood sugar > every 15 minutes and delivers as needed.

The Omnipod does not check your blood sugar at all by itself. You can use a separate CGM system, like the Dexcom, which gives you a blood sugar reading every five minutes, but there is no coordination between the CGM and the Omnipod doing anything automatically.

What you may have heard reported is that like all insulin pumps, the Omnipod system allows you to preset your basal insulin doses and once they are set up by you and your doctor, the system automatically delivers the basal insulin all day and night. All pumps do this. And, as you test your blood sugar throughout the day, and as you eat, you manually push buttons on the pump to tell it how much extra insulin to give you to cover your carbs or bring down your blood sugar.

That is a lot different from the system autochecking your blood sugar every fifteen minutes and adjusting automatically in response. No one has a pump on the market yet that does this. It is what is referred to as the artificial pancreas, or a closed loop system. Artificial pancreas systems are in the near future, but not hear today.

Hope this helps.

Tom

It's called the OmniPod. It's wireless. It has an adhesive strip so that you can put it, say, on the back of your arm, and it comes with a remote control that inserts the insulin via a button press on that remote. You set it once every 24 hours, and based upon the amount of carbs you take in with a meal, you set the remote to give you an extra dose of insulin as-needed. You can also go swimming, deep-sea diving, or lay out in the sun with no problems. the website is:
