[Diabetes-talk] Food Questions

Diabetes is a bit of an individualized disease. What works for me, may not
for you. You may be able to handle a larger carb amount than me, or certain
carbs may not affect me the same as you. Whether you take insulin and
activity level play roles too.

Generally, the rule of thumb, whether healthy food or junk, is portion
control. Learn what proper portions are and stick to them as best as
possible.

If you plan to have a carb-loaded meal, try to make your other meals
low-carb. Fat and calories and protein play a role too. Carbs raise glucose
levels, and proteins stabilize sugars. Always have a protein, low-fat is
best, with meals.

Most veggies are considered free foods, meaning they don't contain enough
carbs to affect glucose levels. Starchy veggies like potatoes and squash and
peas do have carbs though. Fresh fruit has carbs. These carbs are healthy
carbs and typically affect sugars differently than wheat and grains or junk
food.

Fastfood is fastfood. I don't think onion rings are any better than fries.
With fastfood, don't make it a frequent part of your diet, and when you do
eat it, stick to smaller portions. Definitely no super-sizing, grin!

Items like pretzels are often advertised as healthy snacks, but they are
high in carbs. Sugar-free candies are high in carbs too, which is something
a lot of people don't realize. In diabetes control, contrary to popular
belief, it's not so much about sugar in-take as it is about carb in-take,
though foods with refined sugar tend to be high in carbs. But your main
focus with any food should be carb amounts when it comes to glucose control.

You can always schedule an appointment with a nurse educator to go over diet
and portion sizes to have a better understanding.

Subject: [Diabetes-talk] Food Questions

As a new Type 2 diabetic I have a few food questions. I know these are
probably stupid, but I will ask anyway.

1. are there lists of good stuff to eat, and bad? I know that is a
simplistic approach ... but all the books, and diets I have read have this
highly composed, 3 meal a day, 3 snack a day, and have you make all this
stuff. I work two jobs, and have two kids, and don't have the time or
energy for all that futzing around with food.

2. If I eat at a fast food restaurant ... yes, I know it is bad, but
anyway, are onion rings better than french fries, or are they equally bad.

I had a third, but I forgot!

Dave
