[Diabetes-Talk] DXCom G5 First Time User

Bridgit,

I looked at four different pumps that are on the market when I had to
find a new one. The Animas Vibe was clearly the most accessible one for a
totally blind user. I couldn't even get the Medtronic to wake up, since
you have to select the highlighted arrow to wake it up. You have a one out
of four chance of selecting the correct one. I know that some blind users
are using a Medtronic, but probably not the latest version. My sighted
friend has the Medtronic CGM system and just hates it. He says he wants to
go back to the Dexcom, since the Medtronic CGM is pretty inaccurate and the
sensor insertion is more painful.

The Animas Vibe has the ability to combine the Dexcom G4 with it, but it
would be useless to a blind person. We cannot read the screen on the pump
to see our blood sugar, input blood sugars, etc. So, I hope that you can
help your doctor understand that having an accessible system is critical for
you. I love being totally independent with my Dexcom since getting the G5
and mobile app on my phone. My kids are happy too. What a pain to have to
plan a sensor change around when they would be at home.

				Jamie

Veronica,

You can likely answer this. So I discussed getting Dexcom with my endo, but
he wants me to wait because the mini med will soon come out with its
pump/CGM combo, and he feels this would be the better option. Were I
sighted, I may do this, however... I didn't get into it with him just yet
because this can be confusing for some (sigh) but what is the likelihood
that this device will be accessible enough for blind users, do you know?
Thanks.

Bridgit

Daniel, your insurance company is full of it. I use my iPhone exclusively
for my readings. The latest app update even says that the app has now been
cleared by the FDA for making dosing decisions. Forget their inaccessible
receiver and just plan to use the app on your phone and you'll be fine. And
you can tell 'em I said so. <laughing!> Veronica

Good day list:
After much fighting, I appear as if I will be getting my new Dexcom system
after all.
Last time I wrote, I asked about the sensors, etc. However, I am writing to
ask about the receiver for the decks calm G5 this time.
>From what I'm told from Dexcom, you cannot use your smart device for your
readings, due to insurance restrictions. So how would I be able to use my
iPhone, plus the receiver? In other words, if I have to use my iPhone, would
the results eventually be sent to the receiver, when it too, is in range?
