I need to say this apt is fabulous. I have an embroidery machine that runs
from a touch screen on the machine. I have tested a lot of these apts on
it. The KNFB Reader didn't work at al.

Within the last 2 weeks I installed Seeing AI and sat at the machine and
tried &tried to get it to read the screen. Finally, after a unsuccessful
trial, I sat back in my chair and happened to be holding the IPhone up with
my elbow on the arm. Mind you, I was probably 18" to 24" from this 7"
diagonal screen and it started reading the screen to me. Man I was
surprise!

I need to try it on the pump...

Joyce

Yes, Seeing AI is much better than KNFB Mobile, and it's free! My husband
and I love Seeing AI and have used it for so much, including reading my
pump.

Thanks. I'll check it out and report back. Here's hoping for speed, at
least. Thanks again.

Hi Veronica. Sorry about your knee but congratulations on your new guide.

When you mentioned reading your pump with the KNFB Reader, that reminded me
that there is IMHO a far superior alternative out there. It's called Seeing
A I, a free iPhone app from Microsoft. I've also had the KNFB Reader for a
couple of years, and I can nearly guarantee you that Seeing A I will work
better. The huge advantage is that you do not have to line up your shot,
take a picture, and hope you got something. You just turn on the app, point
the camera, and it starts talking when it sees text. It reads the screen of
my computer just fine, so I'm pretty sure it could handle the readout of
your pump.

The app can do lots of other cool stuff too, but I'll leave you to discover
for yourself (grin).

And, it's *free*.

Hi Jamie and all!
Well, I did just come back from guide dog school with a spunky little yellow
lab named Ricotta. And boy did my diabetes gear get tested!
Oh lucky me, I managed to seriously sprain my foot and ankle on our second
walk! I tell you, I hope I never know that much pain again. I ended up at
urgent care and getting put on a short stint of prednisone. This meant that
not only was I closely watching my Dexcom, but I got to play with temp
basals on the stupid Animas. Man, what a piece of junk! I couldn't tell you
why sometimes those various okay buttons didn't take and had it not been for
the KNFB reader, I would have never known whether or not I'd set a temp
basal. It didn't help that the temp doesn't go as high or for as long as the
Cozmo did or what I actually wanted. It kind of made me feel like I was
always fussing with diabetes garbage. But I did successfully manage to get
myself out of various jams without having to ask for help from instructors.
Sheesh!
Upon coming home, I got another round of pred as well as an injection in my
knee on account of messing everything else up trying to walk on the bad foot
and finish class. Last week, I did nothing but lie around and cry. <grin> So
we're starting to move around a bit more this week and my pred routine is
dropping. I will be so glad when I'm done monitoring temp basals. What a
pain!
But at least with the Dexcom I know what's happening. I can't say I'm one of
those with perfect readings right now but at least I can react to what
happens. And on top of that, man, I really thought I'd brought plenty of
cartridges with me. But I wasn't counting on so much extra pred. Would you
believe, I ran out of cartridges on my very last night. I had to rely on my
backup pen so that I'd have enough insulin in my pump for the trip home.
Boy, sure showed me how lousy my control is with a pen. Oops!
But it is nice to have a wicked smart dog around again.
Veronica

Daniel, your insurance company is full of it. I use my iPhone exclusively
for my readings. The latest app update even says that the app has now been
cleared by the FDA for making dosing decisions. Forget their inaccessible
receiver and just plan to use the app on your phone and you'll be fine. And
you can tell 'em I said so. <laughing!> Veronica

Good day list:
After much fighting, I appear as if I will be getting my new Dexcom system
after all.
Last time I wrote, I asked about the sensors, etc. However, I am writing to
ask about the receiver for the decks calm G5 this time.
>From what I'm told from Dexcom, you cannot use your smart device for your
readings, due to insurance restrictions. So how would I be able to use my
iPhone, plus the receiver? In other words, if I have to use my iPhone, would
the results eventually be sent to the receiver, when it too, is in range?
