Hello!
The National Center does not monitor this list so if you want to help please
email President Mark Riccobono at:
officeofthepresident at nfb.org
And cc John Pare:
jpare at nfb.org
Remind him that in 2014 a resolution was passed unanimously by the
convention that diabetes and other medical tools needed by blind persons
should be made accessible, and that in 2016 another resolution was passed to
reinforced the 2014 resolution and set forth a very specific bill of rights
for people who are blind or low-vision and have diabetes. Let him know that
three years after the original resolution, blind and low-vision diabetics
are still struggling to "make do," and that you'd like the national
organization to be accountable with your help for the resolutions passed.

Thanks so much for your help because all of us need to be on this committee
to make a change!

Sincerely, Joy

will attempt again.
	Thanks,

I'm interested in working with a group that will actively work at this and
not just discuss it on a listserve. It's going to take a loud voice to make
companies and politicians hear us. If a resolution was passed in the
Federation to make diabetic devices accessible, then this needs to not only
need to be actively pushed but made a priority. If DAN works with national
to re-evaluate and work on this, that's a great start. I think presenting at
conferences and with vendors could help our message go further. But again,
it will take a collective that's consistent and on top of things. As a blind
diabetic, I don't want to be left in the dust, potentially affecting my
health because I can't access medical devices and tech. If this is not a
priority for the DAN board already, I think it needs to be.

Bridgit, Interesting that you should put it this way. This is what my
husband and I said in the DAN network meeting during convention. We were not
exactly encouraged by leadership of this group, but if you have ideas about
how to get this started again, I'd work with you. Email me off list if you
think this would work.

Educating other blind people is necessary. How to exactly go about that is a
discussion we need to have. In order to get these companies to make devices
accessible, it will take legislation. Both are efforts that require a lot of
work that's consistent. As Sandy has mentioned a couple of times, we need to
begin by contacting leadership in the Federation to make the resolutions
passed a priority. We need to work with the Federation to see this through.

Hello Bridgette,

You have a very interesting concept. It brings a couple questions to mind. I
understand DAN to be an advocate for equality and the expectation of life,
as well other aspects.

1. How do we make sure that our corner of the world, get it?
2. How do we attempt to fix what's wrong?

Please don't mis understand me, this is not an attack. I am trying to survey
those on this list as to what we could as an organization do to fix these
concerns. In my opinion, this may just be a great legislative request.

Sincerely,
Walter Mitchell

Technically, any time there's a device, product, website and tool
inaccessible to the blind, it's discrimination. Segregation is illegal.
Denying things to people based on race, religion or gender is illegal, but
the thousands of disabled people kept from accessing the world apparently is
not discrimination. Until the world gets this, little will change.

Hi Folks,
After reading thru the messages here and getting a notice from Dexcom that
folks with Medicare Advantage Plans will be delayed more in receiving the
CGM, I decided to give the Lawyer, who was handling my case to get coverage
for the CGM. After speaking to her law clerk she did describe the reason
why having this approved thru the CMS that there was not a way for them to
take action.

I told her they are not allowing the blind to access the information for the
CGM in the only way possible for a blind diabetic. Is that not
discrimination?

She said I made a good point and the lawyer would give me a call Thursday.
