Joyce,
18 units for a high? That seems like a lot. Perhaps you require that much
for a correction, but it seems like an awful lot, especially since you
experience frequent lows. Also, what is your carb/insulin ratio? 12 units
for your meal seems like a lot for someone who has frequent lows, but again,
perhaps this fits your individual needs. Not trying to contradict your
doctor, but it seems like a lot of insulin for someone who deals with
frequent lows.
Your tubing is not long enough for sitting on potty, really? Even with
shorter tubing, I've not had this problem when my pump is clipped to my
pants or knickers, and the tubing is attached to my tummy or lower back. How
short is your tubing? You can purchase various clips and pouches to place
pumps in so you can wear them in various parts of your body and/or clothing.
MedTronic itself probably has items you can purchase. Ask your pump rep too.
With my Animas, I have a clip that attaches to the back, and I can just clip
it onto my waistband. I'm sure MedTronic has something similar. And us
ladies can also place them in our unmentionables too, grin.
What type of infusion set are you using? I didn't realize they still had
sets with needles that remained attached. The sets I've used and looked at
have needles to initially insert the canula, but then you pull the needle
part out. Did you have an opportunity to look at different sets? This is
always something you can ask your pump rep or diabetes educator about.
Glad you are finally using the pump. It can take some time to adjust and get
basal rates where they should be, but you will get there. Keep us posted.
Bridgit

Update!
First impression is Day 1 of Pump
I have been on the pump for less than 24 hours. I made it home and it is
kinda what do you do with this thing? I put it in my jean front pocket to
start off with. The tubing is not long enough to drop your pants and sit on
the toilet, so have to figure that one out. After visiting the little girls
room I did tend to keep touching the spots that held it attached to me.
So in less than my first hour home I sat down and felt something poking me.
After checking I found that the anchor had come off and the needle part was
not attached and poking me lower then I had put it.
Telephone call & email sent to trainer as my friend was still at my house
and the trainer had said she put some extra tape type things in my bag of
tricks along with clearing pads as I am allergic to tape. I found this
large circle tape thing and thought of putting a new needle thingy, but then
I would have had to start from the beginning and loading the vial with
insulin. So I just stuck it back in and put this extra larger circle over
the top and waited to hear back from the trainer. I sent my friend out to
get me some paper tape and when she returned back I put a larger X of paper
tape over the entire thing.
Trainer was prompt in calling me back and I did ask her why she only gave me
1 of those extra sticky things. So she will drop me off some today so I
have them on hand.
I had eaten before getting to the office to have the pump put and I didn't
take my coverage dosage and my long Lantis was due to run out while I was
there. Needless to say I told the trainer that when I first walked in and
it was like almost 2 hours when we got around testing and my blood sugar was
475. I said under normal circumstances I would take 18 units and check in
an hour. So that is what I did. Bolis 18 units and an hour later checked.
I was 352 so I was on the downward swing. I had only eaten once and that
was 12 noon and it is 4 PM now. I rechecked at 5 Pm and was 180, by 5:30 PM
I was hungry and ate a clementine. So at 6:30 PM when I sat down to eat my
BS was 86. I did not take any coverage and just had some scallop potatoes
and meat. Shortly after supper I did feel a low so I had a couple of gram
crackers and a cclementine. Bedtime BS was 129. I did eat some cashews and
had a clementine before going to bed.
Morning first wake up 7:30 AM, just let dog out and went back to bed. Wake
up 11:30 AM BS 122 ate oatmeal, nilk & frozen blueberries Bolis 12 units
First 24 hours of the rest of my life with a MiniMed 530 pump.
