Veronica,
What is going to happen in March or April when they stop supporting the
Animas? Will we just not be able to get supplies? I wonder how long after
they stop supporting it will the supplies no longer be available to us.
Time sure is ticking away, and I'm worried about Medicare not covering the
Omnipod. I really need a full-time job to get off of Medicare.

Amy, there is a really smart guy who figured out how to make a talking
remote for an older MiniMed pump. He even tried to interest them in using it
but they refused. I was actually exhibiting at a conference in Las Vegas in
2010 when Medtronic presented at a convention across town and said they'd
lock their pumps down so no one could hack them.
I do know some people who made a device which they use with one of the much
older Minimed pumps to turn it into an almost closed loop system with the
Dexcom so heh heh heh heh you greedy Medtronic, people are still hacking
your older pumps.
But when I talked to them last March I got the same response, we'll try and
go up the food chain, but no further response. I can't imagine other blind
people using the 630G, no way. The only ones I know are very high partials.
That's the problem with that word sometimes. When I was first asking
questions on the phone, the woman on the other end of the line kept
suggesting things and each time I'd say, can't do that. Finally there was a
long pause on the other end of the line and she said, you mean, you're like,
really blind? And want to guess what she said next? Of course. It was, do
you have someone who can do it for you? So I had to grit my teeth and
explain that if we can't do basic operations of the device ourselves, we
pretty much have no independent life. Sheesh!
As for continuing to use a previous pump, I did that with my Cozmo. I went
four years past the end of my warranty and it worked great! Well, until it
didn't. <grin>
In the meantime, let's all just keep after all of these companies and I too
really appreciate everyone chiming in here.

Thank you to everyone who has responded. I did meet with a trainer
earlier this week. That is when we ran into the locked screen problem. She
was told that it's a safety feature to prevent the unlikely occurrence of
someone hacking it. This hasn't ever happened with a Medtronic pump, but
apparently, it occurred in one incidence with a different brand.
The part of this that is annoying me in addition to the possibility of
having to go back to MDI, is that when a representative called me as I was
approaching my warranty deadline, I specifically told them that I am blind
and asked if the new model was different. I was told that "basically" that
the buttons were in a different arrangement in order to provide a larger
screen. It might have been helpful to know about the locked screen feature.
Certainly, by this past March, Medtronic knew that the 630g wasn't
accessible to me, and yet, they told me that other blind people were using
them and that I would need some training, but the rep was sure that the
transition wouldn't be too bad. Now, I have a pump sitting on my desk that I
can not use and will have to go through all the hassle of returning it.
The trainer, -a pump user herself- was really empathetic to our problem, and
said she will try to make her way up the chain of command at Medtronic, in
pursuit of answers. For now, I'll keep wearing my Paradigm for as long as I
can. It's still working fine.
I'll update you all if the trainer comes back with any hopeful responses
from Medtronic.
Thank you for your kind words, -it's not so lonely now that I know that I'm
not the only one in this situation.

I?ve been using a Medtronic Paradigm insulin pump for the last ten years.
Though it is only semi-accessible and I?m totally blind, I?ve been able to
do the basics independently. Recently, due to warranty, I was sent the 630g
model. I have reservations about this newer model and whether I?m going to
be able to use it at all. Are there any completely blind diabetics currently
using this 630g model? If so, please help! I?m feeling fairly desperate
right now. The thought of being forced back to MDI after a decade of the
best control I?ve ever had, is breaking my heart. Thank you all in advance.

Unfortunately, none of the new were models of their pumps are accessible at
all to us. There is no way to unlock the pump. There are several of us on
this list who are looking for a new pump, since our Animas pumps will no

One of our members, Veronica, is having success with the OmniPod, but she's
really great with pumps. I'm using the Animas and will have to switch soon,
but as Jamie points out, the new MedTronic model is not accessible at all
because of the locking feature. Not entirely sure what us blind pump users
will do. I've been using a pump for 15 years and hate to stop.

That was me too. I've been using a pump since 1991 and the thought of
fighting with pens, not knocking them at all, but it was just terrifying me.
I've been using the OmniPod for two months and it's not without its drama.
The only way I've been able to succeed with it is by using the Seeing AI app
to confirm what's on the screen. But this app will not help us unlock the
Medtronic pumps because it doesn't tell us what's highlighted. Amy, here's
the problem with the unlock screen on the 630G. You do the first step to
unlock the phone. Then one of the cursor cross keys is highlighted and you
press it to finish the unlocking. It's not always the same key that is
highlighted. Trouble is, if you guess and let's say the first key press
unlocked the pump. If you press the other 3 in case the first one didn't do
the job, you would be doing things on the pump. I hope that made sense.
If there's a way for Medtronic to defeat this feature, we're still stuck
with more inaccessibility than you had on your old Paradigm. It's a scary
time for sure.
The only other option, the Tandem T-slim is completely touch screen, which
is definitely out.
So let's keep talking and working to see if someone jumps first for us. Stay

I too am using a Medtronic?s Paradigm pump which will be 5 years in February
of 2019. I?ve already begun getting notices that I?ll need to upgrade the
pump since it will be out of warrantee. I suppose I could continue using the
pump I have now provided it continues operating correctly, but if a problem
arises once its out of warrantee then I?ll have big problems. I am not, yet,
sure what I?ll do either and like you do not want to go back on MDI?s. In
another few months its my plan to call Medtronics and ask to meet with a rep
to be shown their latest & greatest pump and to discuss any other options I
might have with them. I have been very happy with Medtronics and would like
to continue with them, but will have to make a decision once I find out
first-hand what pump is most user-friendly to a totally blind person.
So far as the new 630G is concerned, it has been my understanding that when
you upgrade you are supposed to go through training with a pump trainer from
Medtronics. Have you asked for any time with a trainer? It might be that
there is a locking feature that can be set within the pump settings that a
trainer could put into effect for you and make any other changes that might
make using the 630G pump possible.
Good luck and keep me posted since I?ll be in the same predicament soon.

Eileen,
Veronica and I have already met with the educators, and she has even
pursued it even further at a conference. Unfortunately, Medtronic has no way
of disabling the unlock feature on their new pumps. Not being able to get
past the unlock screen makes the 630G and 670G in accessible to a totally
blind person. I also looked at the Tandem, and the entire pump is
touchscreen. There is no way to even figure out how to know what is on the
screen and where to touch it. Veronica is experimenting with the Omni pod,
which may be our only choice for a pump.

Wonder why they would create the lock feature this way. It would be annoying
for sighted people too to not always have it the same button/spot on screen.

pursued it even further at a conference. Unfortunately, Medtronic has no way
of disabling the unlock feature on their new pumps. Not being able to get
past the unlock screen makes the 630G and 670G in accessible to a totally
blind person. I also looked at the Tandem, and the entire pump is
touchscreen. There is no way to even figure out how to know what is on the
screen and where to touch it. Veronica is experimenting with the Omni pod,
which may be our only choice for a pump.

Bridgit, all of the pump companies are doing this. Something about not
wanting people to get too rushed and not look at their pumps. Totally
ridiculous given that back when I started, pumps were designed to be hidden
under clothing, not noticed and completely used without looking. I think the
wrong people have become in charge of design. There's probably a lawyer in
there somewhere and they're so worried about people doing something wrong.
It's really crazy that you even have to unlock these pumps just to silence
or give an okay to an alarm.
But for now, I'm afraid we're stuck with this. Just like the phones.

I agree with the locking of the phone, since our phones often have personal
information in them like credit card numbers. But, the phones do have the
option to not have them lock. I understand that the lock feature on the
pumps are to avoid someone accidentally giving a bolus from their back
pocket or purse, but they need to make the unlock feature accessible.
Call me crazy for thinking this is a possibility, but I wonder if Medtronic
would consider making the 530G available to visually impaired pump users.
The 530G was just discontinued this month, and I am thinking that I made the
wrong decision to not get it while I could. It was as accessible as the
Animas pump. My educator said that it uses the same supplies as the newer
630 and 670G pumps, so I wonder if they would let those of us who are blind
and visually impaired use it. I remember getting my first talking cell
phone about 18 years ago prior to the iPhone being invented, and Nokia set
aside a discontinued model of their phone just for the blind to use with a
program called Talks or something like that. I had that phone until
switching to the iPhone 4.
Anyway, it is a thought, since the 530G was accessible for us. And, it was
small unlike the monster-size 630 and 670!

I did suggest that to the Medtronic person I met at the conference. For me,
I did not find the 530G as accessible as my Animas but it does beat the
current models. At one time it had a feature that would allow us to read a
few status items on an iPhone screen but I was told that they no longer
allowed that.
But especially for those who are already Medtronic customers, might be worth
a phone call or two to see what sort of response you get.
It wasn't something I was willing to do because I'd kind of had it with
starting pumps that were discontinued as soon as I got comfortable with
them. I also decided that since I'd have to give up my beloved Cleo
cannulas, I wanted something that would give me something really different,
since accessibility was in trouble no matter what I did. Oh I got that, all
right. <grin>
But I don't regret it. Not so far anyway.

I agree with the locking of the phone, since our phones often have personal
information in them like credit card numbers. But, the phones do have the
option to not have them lock. I understand that the lock feature on the
pumps are to avoid someone accidentally giving a bolus from their back
pocket or purse, but they need to make the unlock feature accessible.
Call me crazy for thinking this is a possibility, but I wonder if Medtronic
would consider making the 530G available to visually impaired pump users.
The 530G was just discontinued this month, and I am thinking that I made the
wrong decision to not get it while I could. It was as accessible as the
Animas pump. My educator said that it uses the same supplies as the newer
630 and 670G pumps, so I wonder if they would let those of us who are blind
and visually impaired use it. I remember getting my first talking cell
phone about 18 years ago prior to the iPhone being invented, and Nokia set
aside a discontinued model of their phone just for the blind to use with a
program called Talks or something like that. I had that phone until
switching to the iPhone 4.
Anyway, it is a thought, since the 530G was accessible for us. And, it was
small unlike the monster-size 630 and 670!

Bridgit, all of the pump companies are doing this. Something about not
wanting people to get too rushed and not look at their pumps. Totally
ridiculous given that back when I started, pumps were designed to be hidden
under clothing, not noticed and completely used without looking. I think the
wrong people have become in charge of design. There's probably a lawyer in
there somewhere and they're so worried about people doing something wrong.
It's really crazy that you even have to unlock these pumps just to silence
or give an okay to an alarm.
But for now, I'm afraid we're stuck with this. Just like the phones.

Veronica and I have already met with the educators, and she has even
pursued it even further at a conference. Unfortunately, Medtronic has no way
of disabling the unlock feature on their new pumps. Not being able to get
past the unlock screen makes the 630G and 670G in accessible to a totally
blind person. I also looked at the Tandem, and the entire pump is
touchscreen. There is no way to even figure out how to know what is on the
screen and where to touch it. Veronica is experimenting with the Omni pod,
which may be our only choice for a pump.

I do keep forgetting to ask you a question about the Omni pod. I frequently
have to take a bolus in the middle of the night when I get a high glucose
alert from my Dexcom. Is there a way to do that with the Omni pod without
having to get out of bed, set up your phone on the stand and read the

I do keep forgetting to ask you a question about the Omni pod. I frequently
have to take a bolus in the middle of the night when I get a high glucose
alert from my Dexcom. Is there a way to do that with the Omni pod without
having to get out of bed, set up your phone on the stand and read the
remote?
