I sure wish the Dexcom had been invented when I was pregnant.  I had to test Before I ate something and then two hours afterwards and make corrections to keep my blood sugars between 80-110.  I also had to do a 3 a.m. most nights too.


You are correct in that everyone reacts differently to foods.  I can't eat fresh fruit without taking tons of insulin, but most nuts don't do a thing to my levels.   So, I agree with your advice to Dacia that she needs to consult with a diabetic nutritionist.  I never used a dietician until I was pregnant, since I just knew what I could eat.

Love your suggestions, as well, but have found this: for some of us even the healthier nuts are not great. I was told by a nutritionist that Macadamian nuts would do well for me, but testing proved wrong. So even with Bridgit's great suggestions, checking of sugars is still in order. And necessary.

Welcome. The key is to do low carb and high protein for glucose control. Personally, I avoid bread and wheat products and sugar as much as possible. They do the most damage to blood sugars and just raise levels. Protein is what stabilizes glucose levels, so eat as much protein as you want. IE, meat, nuts, etc. Veggies are mostly free foods too, which means you can eat as much as you want without it affecting blood sugars. Potatoes, peas, corn and other starchy veggies are the exception. Hummus is great and yummy but does have carbs. 1/3 cup of hummus has 15 grams of carbs, for example. Fruit, while healthy for you, has carbs too. A nutritionist can help you with all this.

I'm type 1 and have had 2 successful pregnancies, so, it's more than possible. Just follow what your doc recommends and reach out to this group for anything. Good luck.

Hi everyone,
My name is Dacia and my husband and I are expecting our first child at the beginning of  August. I was recently diagnosed with Gestational Diabetes and am looking for any advice you can provide. Specifically, is there a trick to knowing that you have enough blood to put on the test strip to test  your  blood sugar? I am also looking for quick and  easy diabetic friendly recipes. Especially ones  for desserts and snacks so I can give them to those who are  hosting my baby showers.
They want to make sure to have snacks that I can eat. Also, are their any granola bars  or fruit/protein bars that you find that are good and  don't raise your sugar and are low in carbs? What about the protein shakes do you ever  drink those and if so is there are a particular part  of the day that is best to drink them? What about breakfast I find  that to be hard not to  go crazy with carbs what things do you eat for  breakfast? I know eggs are good, but I don't always have time during the week to fix eggs due to my work schedule.
Sorry for all the  questions,I'm just trying to ensure I do the best for myself and my baby.
