Yes, that's the concern. Even if talk back is on the device, will it be
compatible with the Omnipod system? It's not a given just because there's
talk back.

I'm serious, DAN and the NFB need to be communicating with Kurzweil, who,
last I knew, is creative director for Google, and who has a great
relationship with the Federation, to ensure accessibility is a part of this
PDM. Whomever is on the DAN board should take this up immediately.

Jamie, the voice isn't deactivated. It's not there. There are many versions
of android operating systems and TalkBack must be included and tested as
part of the medical device in order to gain FDA approval. So while the
current version of the OmniPod touch screen PDM is android based, it does
not include TalkBack. It's not automatic. This is why we need Google working
with all of these device makers now. We are not home free here. Disabling
phone hardware just means that you can't use phone features. But if they
should choose to represent all of the insulin pump features with graphics,
we're screwed no matter what's implemented and what isn't. 
All of this gets us now is that we can say, hey, there is a speech system
available to your device and then see if we can get them to implement it.
Each device, though android based, will have its own interface, icons,
actions, etc. 
But we have a platform from which to argue. This is what we should be doing
right now. Hope that made sense.

But, I think she means if the specific device for the Omnipod will retain
activation for the voice-over feature. Yes, Droids have voice-over like
Apple IOS devices, but, if they deactivate this feature, it's no good to us.

They can .i am aan android user as well as nan I os user.ttalkback come on
all devices.its aa screenreder developed by google just like voice over is
developed by apple. things are donea bit ddifferently then on voice over
that much I can tell you.in voice over you will use three fingers to
navigate but in talbakc you will use 1 to 2 finger to do all the navigation
and jestures.i don't know if this wil lbea challenge or not for some buthbut
hat is the only difference between talback and voice over.use both and both
have hteiradvantages and disadvantages.theres is no perfect solution for us
out there.

Bridget,

     I have an appointment on Sept. 24 to look at pumps.  The Omnipod is
changing its personal diabetes manager or PDM from a remote to an Android
phone that has been deactivated.  I am hoping that they haven't deactivated
the settings in which you can turn the voice program on.  Veronica is
talking with Google to see if Talk Back can still be put on the phones,
which would make them accessible.  She thinks that the remote that has
tactile buttons on it will still be available for those of us who need it,
but that isn't certain.

The Medtronic 530G is as accessible for us as the Animas pump.  I was told
that it would no longer be available nor supported after June, 2018.  It has
the same infusion sets and cartridges as the new 630 and 670G, but is a
third of the size.  I would say  that it is about the size of the Animas,
but not as fat.  I liked it, although I'm like Veronica in that I do not
care for their infusion sets.  They are similar to the Animas sets, and I
continue to use the Ultraflex sets from my Spirit pump.  However, Medtronic
is very proprietary, so no other connectors will work with their pumps but
their own products.  

I will let you know how my appointment goes and what I find for pumps.  If
it is true that the 530G is being made available for visually impaired
users, then I may go with it.  I did like it.  But, if the Omnipod's  new
Android PDM can still activate the voice, I will probably go with it.  I
have a big decision to make, since I will then have my PDM phone, my
personal iPhone for my Dexcom and my work iPhone to have on me!  That is a
lot of phones!

Veronica and others,

I notified my nurse educator that the Omnipod is the only option for me when
switching pumps. She just emailed me, saying the Medtronic 530G is an option
and that the Omnipod will soon go to a droid device.

My understanding is that the 530G is no longer going to be manufactured like
the Animas. But, if it's an option, then sure, we can use it, but, I know we
discussed this here before.

And Veronica, what is this about the Omnipod becoming a droid? Whatever that
means.
