[Diabetes-Talk] Dexcom overlay patches

There are two products that Dexcom recommends, according to Joyce's email, and one of them I use, which is actually called tachy white. If I could get overlays for free and put them on with one arm I wouldn't bother either, frankly. The ones I see with a hole in them are very difficult to apply with one hand, and remember I can only apply to my upper arm. We agree on these things and that they don't make it easy. I am just glad you can get free overlays that work for you.

No, the tacky stuff doesn't mess up the tape, per se. But if you don't get the tape aimed right, it can mess it up a bit. Also, the Dexcom reads differently than the Libre so it is really really not good to cover the transmitter or insert the sensor through the tacky stuff. I wouldn't think that would be good with the Libre either because you'd be essentially introducing the tacky stuff to the sensor as it went through it and this could interfere with the chemical processes that happen. And when I tried it, the act of making a template was fine. But finding just the right spot to insert the sensor wasn't so fine. I got way too much stuff on my hands and I couldn't control where the sensor landed.
No, the overlays are so easy, so simple and free. Free. Why bother!

It doesn't mess up the tape. It just works that the tape sticks to the sticky and makes it stronger. Veronica, when I speak of sticky, it is A tacky substance, and I can just put the sensor in the middle of the tackiness. It just helps it stick better. The waterproof dressing that I use is very thin. I think you could cut out the size of the sensor and put it around the sensor like overlays. But for me this is so thin I just don't bother, and I have had no problem scanning the censor. I am not sure how yours work, but the one I use is literally a "press down" on the censor and it is pushed into my arm with the little needle under the skin, similar to the way they pierce ears for earrings.

Jeanette, how do you get rid of the extra sticky around the edges without messing up the tape? And how do you know what to leave untouched so the sensor can insert properly?
In the early days, Dexcom told me to make a template with a hole in the middle, use that to lay down the sticky stuff, and when we got to the point of laying down the sensor, it got really really quiet on the line. Thus endeth that little experiment. <grin.>
Thanks.

That isn't so hard to do; it is actually recommended for several CGM's out there. The area you swave with the pad is larger than the sensor, so as long as you know where you will put the censor this probably wouldn't be a problem. This dressing is so thin I thought it might work. It certainly has been a great thing for the Freestyle Libre. And if not that I would just bug Dexcom till they send the censors.

First, I have been fortunate that I have not have sensors fall off, threaten, yes. But I did have one package of overlays not arrive. I called and pestered and pestered and pestered till they overnighted them to me, probably to shut me up. The thing about Dexcom is that you need to be a royal pain in their back side till they connect you with someone who gives you their direct line.
As for Jeanette's suggestion, no, please no. If you put down sticky stuff, you need to know exactly where it is so your sensor lands in that spot. And you do not want sticky stuff where the sensor needs to insert into your body. Also, only use Tegaderm if you come up with a system for cutting a hole in the middle of it. Dexcom gives very explicit instructions not to cover the transmitter and they mean it. Those overlays are free and you are entitled to have them. They are easy to use and they do work. Please be careful with this one.
Milton, I have not been successful getting the G6 to take a photo of the sensor codes either. There just isn't enough time for us to figure out how to line it up and then actually get it. I use the Seeing AI app to read the code and that does work well. I sometimes get the transmitter coees but there are so many other numbers around it that there can be doubt. I often end up asking on that one.
The weird bit is that I goofed it once and the app came back with an alert which said that I had entered an incorrect serial number. I then called Dexcom and asked. Yes, they do know the serial numbers of transmitters they send us. I said, so why don't you just tell me? That would sure make my life easy, especially given that with Medicare, we only get one at a time. That was a tough question for the poor tech support person. But I do love jangling their chains. Stay tuned.
But Joyce, it's extremely possible that you got a lot of sensors where the sticky bit of the tape was not done properly. That happened to me with a bunch of Cleo cannulas once. So keep on them. You're worth it.
Then let us know what happens.
Veronica

Joyce, there are several similar products in other pharmacies. I would ask them, or you could ask for Tegaderm, and show them the size you need.
