[Diabetes-Talk] travel and diabetes in public

I agree. I would never take insulin before I even ordered in a restaurant. You never know how long it will take to place your order or how fast or slow your meal will arrive, and Humalog is considered a fast-acting insulin. I usually take my insulin right before my first bite of food unless my blood sugar is high and needs to come down before I eat.

Yes, it not only depends on your endo, but the rest of your health and how you process carbs. I haven't been told to bolus before a meals in decades. First, I don't always eat a set carb amount at a given meal, often not finishing my food, so pre-bolusing would get me in trouble. And in fact, I often need to wait 30 minutes or so before bolusing after eating carbs because insulin acts fastly in my body, but carbs don't digest at the same rate, so I've experienced lows a lot if I bolus right after eating. So it really depends on the individual in terms of prebolusing.

Dear Amber,

Docs, nurses, educators differ, I'm just sharing that my Indo's nurse practitioner told me to inject my humolog 30 minutes before eating. I've injected discreetly in the car if I'm with friends, or in the restroom before ordering. It fits in nicely to do it while waiting for a table. I'm still too sugary to worry about my bg going too low if the meal takes longer than a half hour to arrive.

Always with love,

Lissi

Hi all:
I will be traveling a lot for work in the next year. What are some things I should know for traveling by plane with diabetes? Do I have to have a doctor’s letter or anything, or do TSA agents give you problems about needles or lancets or your CGM? Can a CGM go through X-ray equipment? I will be staying in hotels and I need to keep my insulin cold. If I ask can I get a small fridge?
Any other things I should know?
How about eating in public and diabetes? I have to take my insulin right before eating. Do you just go to the bathroom and do your shot?
Sorry I’m just a little paranoid here. Thanks for any advice.
:)
Amber
