[Diabetes-Talk] OmniPod and Medtronic 530G

Not to mention that with Alexa, literally anyone could give her directions,
accidently or otherwise activating a pump. I'm sure the Alexa comment was a
joke, but I wouldn't trust a medical device that can be ran via my Echo. My
lights, my vacuum, even my thermostat, but not my insulin pump.

Hi Verlyn.
First, as with most any pump, you can try it for a month and if it doesn't
work out, they will help you cancel all insurance and costs. In addition,
you can run the Omnipod with saline while you try it out if you like. I'd be
curious about this other blind Omnipod user as I haven't yet met anyone. I
knew of one guy many years ago but he was not totally blind.
I actually set up sessions with a trainer before I'd made up my mind. It's
not for the endocrinologist to say what you can and can't handle. After all,
not all sighted people like or can handle every pump they see either. So we
should have the right to try something and reject it, just as they do. Some
days I really get tired of having to be so darn perfect all of the time.
<grrrrrrrrr!> I actually decided not to go with this pump in 2009, almost
chose it in 2017 but went with the Animas instead. Bad move there, as it
turned out. So in 2018, I saw it as my last hope and it is working out well
for me. But truthfully, for all these 27 years I've used a pump, there has
been trickery involved in working around inaccessible features and right
now, that's just how it is if we want those benefits.
And no, we're not going to get Alexa or anyone like that right now because
that would have to get FDA involvement and special approval, bla bla bla!
Not happening.
Veronica

Thank you to everyone that responded.

I spoke with Medtronic this morning about the 730G and was told they were
not sure they had any more in stock that could be given to someone who had
never had one as Medtronic is keeping these for replacement for any 730G
users that may have trouble with their current pump.
I did not know about the 530G until reading the groups responses. So I will
be back on the phone with Medtronic tomorrow in regards to this model.

Also, I will speak with Veronica regarding the Omni Pod as I have been
emailing with another blind Omni Pod user.
The difficulty at hand is convincing my doctor that I can indeed use the
Omni Pod indecently. When I saw her Monday she was not willing to give me a
prescription for it. In addition due to the small amount of basal rates I
use the pens will not work out either. Such a encouraging visit as her last
comment was, "I don't know anything that might work." You can just imagine
how that made feel. She is a great Endocrinologist who has a passion for
diabetic education. However, I am the only totally blind patient she has had
in all her years of practice.

I am determined to stay on a pump and will have faith that in the next year
one of companys will develop an accessible pump.

Thanks again and I'll keep you posted.

Blessings,

Verlyn
