Bridget,

Thanks for letting me know your model number. Apparently it is not only you who got the 530G pump because of your “special” situation. . It was only a week or 2 ago on this list Verlyn posted about having just received his brand-spanking new Medtronics pump 530G. I believe he was also a Medtronics pump user who was allowed to upgrade even after Medtronics discontinued the pump. And I don’t begrudge him the pump I’m glad that he is able to get one and use it with the all-important protection of having warrantee coverage on it.

Yes, I am too in a special situation because I am a Medtronic’s pump user for many years now and the only pump I can use is the Medtronics 530G which the manufacturer promised me last October I would be upgraded to once my pump was out of the warrantee which it is. I do not want to go back on insulin injections and back to bad diabetic control. I am well aware the the 630G is the pump still on the market, but totally inaccessible to a blind person.

Eileen,

Medtronic has the 530G, which is now discontinued, the 630G and the 730G. The 630 and 730 are not the same as the 530G. As previously stated here several times, Medtronic gave people a deadline to upgrade to the 530G until October 26 of last year if they wanted to be covered by a warranty, because it had decided to discontinue the model. I think the reason it extended warranty on 530Gs until October was because several blind diabetics had no other options since Animas has stopped manufacturing. But after October, Medtronic would no longer provide a warranty of the 530G.

Because of those of us who met the October deadline, we are under warranty, and of course, Medtronic has to keep so many 530Gs in stock now so if we need a replacement, one is available. It doesn't surprise me that it's now difficult to get a 530G. There were 2 different options last fall, one being the pump exchange for Animas users, but most were switching to 630 and 730Gs. Even though I had an Animas, I was not a part of the exchange. My endo sent a letter to Medicare and Medtronic, explaining why I needed to upgrade by October, so approval was given for me to do so. So, if you were either ready for an upgrade under warranty, or if you needed to switch for some reason, you were able to still get the 530G by October 26. My understanding is that any 530Gs left in stock are now for those of us under warranty. Anyone wanting to upgrade now has to choose between the 630 and 730G. But these models are not the same as the 530G.

So you have it, my model number is:
Serial num: pcr806284h
MMT751

Subject: [Diabetes-Talk] A Question About Model of Medtronic 530G Pump.

Hi All,

I am still working with medtronic & my supply company in trying to upgrade my pump. I am being told now, by the supplier, that Medicare will not let me, under Medicare, upgrade to the Medtronic 530G insulin pump. I found this hard to believe so called Medicare earlier today. The Medicare rep specified nothing about not covering the 530G pump.

Anyway, I think this is my supply company pushing the Revel pump on me because they don’t have the 530G in their inventory (only my guestimation). They are telling me that the model 723 is the exact same thing as the 530G pump. The pump I have now is a Medtronic Paradigm Revel model 723 and I think that they are trying to sell me the exact same model as I am currently using. If there is no longer a way to get a 530G I would settle for the same pump I have now so long as it has the 5 year warrantee. However, if there are still 530G’s floating around and I believe there are because they still need to replace pumps that break down, then I want to upgrade to a better, more up-to-date pump to move onto. Besides Medtronic’s promised me last fall that is what I’d be moved onto when my existing pump was ready for upgrading.

So do any of you using the 530G know your model number? Can you please let me know what the model number is?
My current pump is a paradigm Revel 723, so far as I have known these past 5 years it is not a 530G pump. I’d just like to know if anyone who knows they have a 530G knows their model number. Thanks so much for any help with finding this out. I feel like I’m getting a major run-around.

Eileen
