[Diabetes-Talk] when out

When I had my Cozmo and Animas pumps, I wore them in a pocket that had a Velcro strap that went around my waist. When I wanted to do something on the pump in public. I removed it from the waist band. But in order to really hear it, I had to pull the thing way out, which meant that when I was done, I had all the tubing to stuff back in my clothing. I learned to just do it and truthfully, if I acted like it was no big deal, so did everyone else.. Now I have a remote which isn't attached to anything, but I still occasionally have to say to my friends, hang on, I'm counting. I have diabetes. So what! My guide dog threw up once in public. Kids get sick in public. Kids scream in public. Life happens when we're out there living. Just enjoy the fact that you're well enough to be out. Smile and at least you'll feel better. Once my sister and I were out at a restaurant with a friend. Someone was staring at us for no particular reason. Our friend turned to the person and just said, why don't you take a picture, it lasts longer. End of that one. <lol.>

To play Devil's Advocate, sighted or blind, anyone taking insulin or testing blood sugars will likely be a curiosity to anyone. So, it's not specific to being a blind diabetic. That said, again, not that many people pay attention. But if they do, so what? I breastfed my baby's in public, so testing or taking a shot is nothing, grin.
