I suspect this one might require a new watch, depending on whether they can create the function just using firmware, or whether they have to add a sensor not currently in the watch, meaning a hardware upgrade. I believe Apple will get the function checked out by the FDA as well, since they ran the electrocardiogram through FDA’s approval. This is all part of their making healthcare more accessible to everyone any time. And the app will come to you as part of an update of your Watch OS.

I understand that apple will come up with a watch that will test sugars.
I am also told that I don't need to buy a new watch every time, that it 
is an app and it would fit on my watch.
We shall see what happens in two years.
