[Diabetes-Talk] FB group

Again, no need to drop any forum at this point in time. It's up to each individual which way they want to connect; if one forum, great, if both, great as well. But, it's prudent to have a FB group so we are prepared for the future. Whether we like it or not, the majority of people use and communicate via Facebook and other forms of social media. Every generation has it's "new" things that previous generations don't get, but being flexible and adaptable is a good thing, and BTW, an ideal we promote in the Federation, grin. Several people here were excited about a FB group, which is why I created it; and most NFB groups/divisions have a social media presence, so it's important we do as well. And several people have joined the FB group for the diabetes group, because they prefer it. But we can continue to have and use both the listserve and FB group and anything else we can think of.
I think people are forgetting the reason we decided to create a FB presence. We knew we would have to reach outside the NFB to make accessibility in diabetes tech a true priority, and it was agreed that in order to have a broader presence and potentially gain more traction, we have to have a FB presence. This listserve, while public, is much more private than FB, and not many people are aware of the NFB NET listserves, not just the diabetes list. And younger people prefer FB and other social media platforms. So, moving forward and adapting to the times, we decided to create the FB group.
Curious, because I hear this a lot, but what exactly is the problem with social media? Yes, people can be on it too much, but in general, what's wrong with a platform for sharing and communicating that reaches millions? I don't understand why some look down upon it, even condescending at times. It can be a useful tool, especially if done correctly. It's how I advertise my publications and performances in addition to connecting with people I don't see on a regular basis. And with FB groups, it's a great, easy way for people from across the world to connect over shared interests. Having both the listserve and FB group is beneficial for everyone and sets us up for the future.
But again, I stress that whichever way you're most comfortable communicating, that's fine. Doesn't hurt to try new things though, wink.

I’m not sure why we need both this group and a Facebook group. But I’m for keeping this one. I will not be on a Facebook group, and the trend right now is getting off Facebook, not getting on it!

I hope this group stays up and going,
Even if I drive all of you crazy, someone has to do it loll.
Keep up the swell work for face book if folks like it there.
